Within the confines of the Naval air atation, there IS a xemetery buried under a plane runway not far from the light house and the Presbyterian church at Mayport. Mrs.Edwards book has a page on that one. also. . During WWII the Navy in their haste to build the base covered up alot of things. Somewhere too there is a buried slave cemetery as well as some Indian graves, so I have been told. Several months ago there was some excavation of the cemetery near the lighthouse, which uncovered one stone, so I am told. However, the digging was limited and the excavations covered because of the Navy activity. I am happy that the Old Pablo Cemetery was not taken over by the Navy. Although I have not been able to confirm this,I still believe this started as the Dewees family burial ground, as mentioned in one of the late 1800s surveys of the property. Ihis survey also mentioned the slave cemetery. However, the present Pablo cemetery is larger than the area reserved when the property was first sold about 1840. I am told the present area was given by a man by the name of Bull. If anyone knows more about this deed I would appreciate hearing, The people now in charge of the cemeery apparently know little more. Ed T of PGH PS I am not sure it was the Navy who stopped people on the jetties or the Coat Guard, That was a pretty dangerous place to be when the tide started in. Jo, you must be a very good swimmer indeed to have swum there. I know of a couple of fishermen who got trapped out on the jetties, and the Coast Guard had a tough time rescuing them. ---------- >From: "Tony and Julie Howell" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERIES >Date: Mon, Jul 23, 2001, 6:49 PM > >hi jo - it seems i've heard, "way back when", about there being a >cemetery on the mayport base. ed taylor in pittsburgh may know something >about that one since the mayport base used to be the plantation of his ancestors. > >ed, if you're reading this, do you have any info on a cemetery that is on >the base at mayport? > >yeah, i know what you mean about "the good old days." my (now grown) >children roll their eyes and get that "here she goes again" look whenever i >start in on how "they used to do something." admittedly, i do sometimes >feel like i'm dragging out my dad's "i used to have to walk through miles >of snow" story. now that it think of that one, there must have been a >bazillion kids walking through knee deep snow all over the place. it's a >wonder they didn't all run into each other! > >take care, >julie > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2001 9:54 AM > Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERIES > > > Hi Julie, > Thanks for the information, hon, most thankful for all the help. > The Cemetery I had mentioned at the Navy base is out at Mayport.
