Thanks - Julie - for clearing up my confusion. I did not know the one in Jax was referred to as the Wiley Cemetery. What is the source of that bit of info? I would be interested to know what the condition of the Jax one is now. The Jax one is much smaller than the one on Lorreto Rd. Is the Jax one owned and managed by the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church? My reason for asking is that I suspect my Taylor family may have gone to this church in its early days after they came back from Texas via Enterprise Fl. If so, there may be records of them in the church's archives, if not burned up in the early 1900s fire. There is a web site about the history of this church, if anyone is interested. Go to Google. Thanks for asking about me. For an almost 80 year old I am doing great. I hope you are doing well too. We are about to leave town for a few days and I may "unsubscribe" from FLDUVAL for that period of time, so if mail to me bounces you will know why. My best wishes. Hi Ed - If you go to http://www.cowart.info/MyWeb.htm some pictures of the Old City Cemetery (aka Willey Cemetery) are posted. The land at the corner of Union and Catherine Streets was donated in 1852 to the city of Jacksonville by Captain and Mrs. Charles Willey for a cemetery. This information is also available from T. Frederick Davis' book on the history of Jacksonville, and on http://www.metrojacksonville.com/content/view/411/95/. Just for the sake of completeness, the Old City Cemetery (aka Willey Cemetery) is also known as the Old Duval Colored Cemetery. A 1990s copy of the city plat map of the cemetery indicates that the cemetery(ies) is a rectangular shape with a street dividing the rectangle in half lengthwise. The street is called, appropriately, Cemetery Street. The left side of the rectangle is labeled OAKLAND 122050-0000 and is divided into "Duval Cemetery", "Colored Cemetery", and Old City Cemetery. Oakland refers to the name of the area of town; the number is the real estate number of the entire cemetery parcel. On the right side of the street, the rectangle is divided this way: the north half is divided up into 40 residential lots labeled "Cole's S/D PT BLK 1 P BK 1-125 1-145 OAKLAND 2143 122067-0000." The 'translation' is: Cole's Subdivision, part of block 1, Plat Book(s) 1 page 125 and Plat Book 1, page 145, Oakland, 2143 (subdivision number), 122067-0000 (real estate number of this particular parcel of lots). Below these lots, still in the right half of the rectangle, is "Cemetery" - part of the Old City Cemetery and, at the front corner, "Park". The streets bordering the block are: Jessie Street, Washington Street, Union Street, and Ionia Street. If anyone wants a copy of this plat map, I'll be happy to fax it to you if you give me your fax number. A message posted to the FLDUVAL list back in May 2000 indicates that "one stone in St. Joseph's, the Catholic section of the Old City Cemetery, bears the date 1827. Deep excavations in the Protestant area have revealed several skeletons, all buried with nead to the north and feet to the south. Since the cemetery is higher than the surrounding area, it may have been an Indian burial ground. Prior to the opening of Willey, or Old City Cemetery, the yard of St. Johns Episcopal Church had been the chief burying ground for the Jacksonville Community. In 1853 the church decreed that there should be no more burials in the church yard and urged that bodies be removed and reinterred in the new cemetery owned by the city." There has also been some discussion on various lists that not all of the bodies were removed from the grounds of St. Johns Episcopal Church. The cemetery is in decent condition. The pictures on those websites will give you some idea. It doesn't have much in the way of vegetation - grass, shrubs, etc. - but it's kept pretty clean. I would certainly think that Immaculate Conception Catholic Church might have some records on the Catholic section of Old City Cemetery. If they don't, you might contact the Catholic Diocese in St. Augustine. Their web site is at http://www.dosafl.com/. If diocese records were kept in St. Augustine, the 1901 Jacksonville fire wouldn't have had any effect on them.
