Julie, are you out there? Your e-mail addy on the Cemetery transcription page is incorrect and I need a look-up for St Joseph's. Anyone know if Julie is OK and what her new addy is? Many thanks! Hi Ann - I'm here. New email address is: tjhowell1@bellsouth.net. Sorry you had trouble getting ahold of me. Unfortunately I do not have an actual survey for St. Joseph's Cemetery. When I contacted the church about allowing us to put their cemetery records on-line, some of the members of the church balked at the idea. What they agreed to was to let me put my name on the on-line cemetery name as a contact person and I would then, in turn, give an inquirer the names and phone numbers of the persons at St. Joseph's to contact. Rather like going around your elbow to get to your nose, but there it is. I have not contacted these people in quite a while so do not know if these gentlemen are still there; should you find the info has changed I'd appreciate your letting me know so i can update my records. Hi Julie - Are you are referring to the St. Joseph's Cemetery across the alley north of the Old City Cemetery in Jacksonville? Perhaps not. It has been many years since I went there but when I did it was not in very good shape, "stone wise". The discouraging thing was that many of the grave stones were piled up against the fence, some broken and probably some missing. Hopefully the church has straightened out the problems. But I was fortunate in that the grave stone of my great great grandmother Catherine (Joaneda aka Floyd) Taylor was at ground level as were her daughter Carol Taylor (Hedrick) Ochus and her granddaughter and the granddaughter's husband. In a back corner also at ground level was Carol's son Augustus Ochus and his wife, Minnie. I hope the stones are still there and still in good shape, but I would not be surprised if they are not there. That cemetery was not in a very safe area. But maybe you are referring to the cemetery near Mandarin. Ed T of PGH ------------ On May 29, 2007, at 9:24 AM, tjhowell1 wrote: > Hi Ann - I'm here. What doesn't make sense to me is why the church balked at putting names on line. Is this a very large cemetery? It could be possible that they may not allow you to use church records and that would probably be legal but what if you just did a survey on your own? In 1999 and 2000 my husband and I went to NC and took over 400 digital pictures of the various cemeteries hoping to find many of my own genealogy researched ancestors. Rather than waste the photos we donated them to the USGENWEBarchives archives of NC.. After I tweaked the pictures I wrote the text formatted as instructed by the manager. It worked out wonderfully. Could it be possible that you could do the same for St. Joseph's Cemetery? I have the site somewhere on my data base regarding Florida Law in regards to cemeteries. If you would like for me to locate the site I would be more than happy to look for it. I know they had a big to-do in NC because some homes were placed on land sites of very old cemeteries and the land owners were not allowing researchers to come on the property. They looked up NC cemetery laws and found that they could legally do so. They are still working on the legality of it now. Good luck with your research. I guess I am a trooper in my golden years.. If it were me I would take my camera, go to the cemetery with pad and pencil in hand and have at it. <smile, grin> Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edgar Taylor" <ertjr1@earthlink.net> To: "Tony & Julie Howell" <tjhowell1@bellsouth.net> Cc: <flduval@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2007 2:10 PM Subject: [FLDUVAL] St. Joseph's Cemetery - Re: Julie Thames Howell > Hi Julie - Are you are referring to the St. Joseph's Cemetery across > the alley north of the Old City Cemetery in Jacksonville? Hi Ed - Sorry to be so long in answering. We just got back into town. Hope this finds you doing well. The Catholic cemetery you are referring to is part of Wiley Cemetery (aka Old City Cemetery) in downtown Jacksonville. The cemetery Ann was asking about is out in Mandarin on Loretto Road at Old St. Augustine Rd.
