Now, I am very embarrassed. In looking over my emails I find that it was not the Jacksonville library that was going to charge 25.00, but a library in CA. Sorry....blushing... mht
Thank you for checking this out. I couldn't believe the price and told them so (all this via email) but there was no response in the way of correction or whatever. mindy ----- Original Message ----- From: "astaley" <astaley@comcast.net> To: <flduval@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 29, 2006 10:48 AM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] obit look-ups > Mindy and all, > > The FL T-U has obits online for 27 April 1997 to 30 Jun 2001 for free. > After > 30 Jun 2002, the searches are free and you can see a part of the obit; you > then pay $1.95 to view all of the obit and it is left online for 24 hours. > > The Library charging $25.00 seemed an outrageous amount. I appreciate the link, however, the obits on site do not go back as far as 1986. Also, for Anna there was only a death notice, not a full obit. If anyone is willing to look these up for me I will gladly pay for copies and shipping. A few days ago, I posted a message on this list asking for help with some research in Duval County. A very kind lady answered and worked with me over several messages and was able to find the information that I wanted. She knows who she is, but I wanted to thank her again, publically. You are a jewel!! Margaret McCleakey, Arlington, TExas
Mindy and all, The FL T-U has obits online for 27 April 1997 to 30 Jun 2001 for free. After 30 Jun 2002, the searches are free and you can see a part of the obit; you then pay $1.95 to view all of the obit and it is left online for 24 hours. The Library charging $25.00 seemed an outrageous amount. I don't know who you talked with, so I called the Senior Librarian of the Jacksonville Public Library Genealogical Department and she stated that the Library does not charge and does not collect funds. Their policy is to provide the citation for the obituary (you can call them direct at 904-630-2409) and then the person requests the item via Interlibrary Loan (ILL) from their own library. When the ILL request is received at Jax, they make a copy of the obit and send it. The WPA started the compilation of indexing the newspaper for the years that the Library has a copy of the newspaper; that index was being kept up [I don't know about now; I will need to ck the next time I go to the Library]. Most of the years included birth, marriage, and death indexes. I hope this helps, Ann Staley, CG(SM) [CG, Certified Genealogist, is a service mark of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, used under license by Board-certified associates after periodic competency evaluations.] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Williams" <bwms@alltel.net> To: <flduval@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 29, 2006 9:11 AM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] obit look-ups > Wow! If SKS would be going to the library soon I would like to get a copy of the obituary of Frank/Ben Turpen who died 31 December 1938. He lived at 206 Palmetto in Jacksonville for a number of years. I think his wife's name was Mary. His actual name was Benjamin Franklin Turpen, but he went by Frank most of his life, possibly going by Ben when his cousin, Ben Turpin the cross eyed comedian of the 1920s and 1930s, became famous. I would be happy to pay for copy and postage costs. Sharon
There is a very brave man buried in Duval County. The VMI Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864. Two hundred fifty seven cadets were on the field. Ten cadets were killed in battle or died later from the effects of their wounds; 45 were wounded. The youngest participating cadet was fifteen; the oldest twenty-five. Could someone in Duval County please find and photograph the tombstone of: Nicholas James Bayard, VMI class of 1867, Jacksonville. If you could find some biographical information that would be wonderful! A group of Virginia Military Institute alumni are attempting to locate the graves of all of the cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market in the Civil War. You can visit their web page at http://www.augustagavmiaa.info/new_market_database.htm Read about the battle at http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Civil_War/cwnm.html. They contacted me about my ancestor who was a cadet then, and I volunteered to help them get the other graves photographed, knowing we have so many wonderful people on Rootsweb. ;-) Thanks, Sarah Reveley San Antonio, Texas

This is weird, I don't know if this is of any interest to you, but my landord's name is Harold L. Friedlin, Jr. He is a Jacksonville native and lives here in Jacksonville, Florida. He and his wife have been married a very long time, not that long, but possibly he is related to the Harold Lee Friedlin you are searching for. I am not free to give out any information, but I believe he is listed in the phone book. If you should contact him, please do not tell him where you got this information. > > From: ann parkinson <pas47pap@yahoo.com> > Date: 2006/11/09 Thu AM 10:23:09 EST > To: Fred Hagan <fhagan2@earthlink.net>, flduval@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] Friedland/Reagan Marriage; Duval County, 1928 > > Florida Marriage Collection, 1822-1875 and 1927-2001 > Name: Harold Lee Friedlin > Marriage Date: 1928 > County of Marriage: Duval > Volume: 56 > Certificate: 14894 > Source: Florida Department of Health > > Florida Marriage Collection, 1822-1875 and 1927-2001 > Name: Mildred Reagan > Marriage Date: 1928 > County of Marriage: Duval > Volume: 56 > Certificate: 14894 > Source: Florida Department of Health > > > > --- Fred Hagan <fhagan2@earthlink.net> wrote: > > > Mildred C.
