    1. [FLDUVAL] Hanbury Walker 1926 - 1987, Jacksonville FL (son of the Marrying Parson of Augusta GA)
    2. Judith F. Russell
    3. Hanbury Walker of Jacksonville was the son of Thomas Walker of Augusta Georgia, "The Marrying Parson." Their family line can be tentatively traced back to Joseph Walker (he signed his name IW) of pre-Revolutionary times in Edgefield, SC. The family also had close ties with the family of Samuel Walker and Martha-Jefferson Bell. Hanbury Walker probably lived his entire life in Jacksonville. His father, according to the 1930 Census was an accountant and the family lived at 2354 Riverside Avenue. The mother was Zelda and the other children were Mattie, Jacqueline, Zelma, and Geraldine Walker. I hope that someone on this list knows someone associated with the Hanbury Walker family who is interested in genealogy. I've got lots of info that I've recently accumulated that I"d like to share with the family. Here's the line to Hanbury as I think it should be: 1 Joseph IW Walker - 1794 ...... 2 James Walker 1765 - .............. 3 William Walker 1800 - .................. +Eliza Kirkland 1811 - Father: Isaac Kirkland ...................... 4 Thomas Walker 1851 - 1939 "The Marrying Parson" of Augusta, GA .......................... +Martha 1857 - .............................. 5 John E. Walker 1887 - .................................. +Zelda E. 1894 - ...................................... 6 Hanbury Walker 1927 - 1987 Thanks, Judy Russell Bogart, Georgia Walker research site at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/u/s/Judith-F-Russell

    3. Hi Ann - I'm here. New email address is: tjhowell1@bellsouth.net. Sorry you had trouble getting ahold of me. Unfortunately I do not have an actual survey for St. Joseph's Cemetery. When I contacted the church about allowing us to put their cemetery records on-line, some of the members of the church balked at the idea. What they agreed to was to let me put my name on the on-line cemetery name as a contact person and I would then, in turn, give an inquirer the names and phone numbers of the persons at St. Joseph's to contact. Rather like going around your elbow to get to your nose, but there it is. I have not contacted these people in quite a while so do not know if these gentlemen are still there; should you find the info has changed I'd appreciate your letting me know so i can update my records. 2. Alma Elizabeth DELOACH born Florida, August 06, 1904 married: J. Albert HORTON It's possible she was born in Gainesville. Her sister Ruth was born in Lake City & her other sister, Claire, was born in Gainesville. In the 1900 & 1910 census the family lived in Gainesville. However, Alma's parents died in Duval County. Her mother, Mary Elizabeth HUDSON died in 1919 & her father, John E. L. DELOACH died in 1939. I don't know if Alma married Albert HORTON in Jacksonville, or elsewhere. I did find them in Houston,Texas, in the city directory for years 1936, 1937 & 1938. By 1939, when Alma's father died in Jacksonville, she was back in Jax. Then, I lost track of her again. Until... 2. Hi, I just found the date my great grandfather was mayor, May 28, 1907. He was appointed first mayor of South Jacksonville. When they held the first election for mayor, he was defeated. So this proves there was not a mayor of South Jacksonville bedore May 1907. The papers of know of are the Florida Times-Union and earlier the Jacksonville Journal. Good luck. 3. Ann & James, Thank y'all for your reply. I googled 'list of mayors for Jacksonville' after I sent the message & found the link you mention James. This goes to show, as y'all know, why we should always prove our family roots when they are sent by someone else to you (not trying to sound rude, I apologize if I do). Ann, I will check-out South Jax later today, am about to go get ready to go over to my grandfather's for lunch then to with him to visit my Dad in rehabilitation for his right leg was amputated above the knee last month. I will ask Ray where the information about his Uncle Clayton being Mayor could have come from & see if he knows. What are some local Jax newspapers? 1. [FLDUVAL] Philip Fraser - Mayor of Jax -Uriah Poinsett and a little history - Re: Griner Family
    2. Edgar Taylor
    3. One of he mayors of Jacksonville listed was Philip Fraser. He married one of my Dewees relatives who was the widow of ship Capt. Uriah Poinsett. Fraser was a Federal judge appointed after the War between the States because he had sided with the Union. The Fraser family were probably forced to leave Jax later after the War because of people's animosity. Poinsett came from a long line of ship captains and was reported to have been born in the Jax area before Jax existed, probably on his father's ship, and when he died he was buried where the Episcopal cathedral now is located in down town Jax. Whether his body was moved, as was many of the others to other cemeteries, is a question. Ed T of PGH -------- On May 17, 2007, at 7:08 PM, James Boehm wrote: > Sorry not to be of much help. Right now I find his Uncle Clayton, as he calls him, to be a stumbling block for he & his family have hidden themselves quite well in that pesky 'Ancestor Relocation Program' we all know & love. Uncle Clayton was born up here in Jawgha, in the city of Nashville county of Berrien, on 09 September of 1879 to my second great-grandparents Martin Jasper & Olive Missouri NASH Griner. In 1900 he is listed in Clarke County, Georgia (was a student at UGA) & from there went to Mercer & graduated with a law degree. Come 1910 he is in D.C. as a legal secretary for a member of Congress from Georgia, 1920 & 1930 he is in Jacksonville with his wife Edna SAVILLE Griner (18 September 1882 - 28 October 1979) & children Oliver Clayton Jr. (died in 1923) & Samuel Saville Griner ( 28 September 1918 - 20 January 1997). Uncle Clayton passed-away 18 September 1976 in Jacksonville as did the others. He was the President of an insurance company in Jacksonville & is said to have been the mayor at one point. I am looking for any obituaries, relatives, etceteras.
