I don't doubt at all what you are saying, but as a member of that church, I was certainly unaware of this, and no one asked me if I objected. I am going to ask our pastor if he has any objections to the cemetery being surveyed and the survey being posted online. If he does not object, I will let you know. I had actually talked to the secretary a few years ago about surveying it in the future, and she thought it was a good idea. I really don't have time to do it now. My idea was to survey it and possibly put the survey in booklet form to be sold by the church as a money-raising venture. I didn't plan to photograph the tombstones as part of it, though. L. When I talked to the gentleman who was in the St. Joseph's Office he told me that the church has a map of where, and who, all the burials are. As I stated in my message to Mary Kemp, I don't think the church wants a survey done of the St. Joseph's Cemetery. I was given the distinct impression, in fact, that they were completely against anyone other than the church itself having a 'record' of the burials there. I was also given to believe that the church membership (particularly the 'older more established members') were very private about the names of their ancestors buried there and did not want it recorded, photographed, etc. by anyone. The names of the contact persons that I provided were the gentleman that I had originally spoken to (Steve Connley) and a man (Mr. Dobrie) that Mr. Connley said knew a great deal about the burials in St. Joseph's Cemetery. As I said in my earlier message, I don't know if either of those gentlemen are still connected actively with St. Joseph's. Julie From: lmickler To: flduval@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, June 06, 2007 9:37 PM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] St. Joseph's Cemetery - Re: Julie Thames Howell I am a member of St. Joseph's Church. When I inquired a couple of years ago about whether an ancestor was buried there, I was told that the church did not have records of the burials in the cemetery. If there has been a survey made since that time, I am not aware of it. St. Joseph's has a fairly good size cemetery, and the graves go back to the 1800s. The church recently increased the size of the cemetery. I don't think it would be objectionable for someone to survey the cemetery. I would like to do it myself, and if I ever finish the project I am now involved in, I thought I might. However, it is going to be quite a while before I will be available to do it. Apparently the contact persons that were named by Ms. Howell are willing to go to the cemetery and do lookups. L Mickler
Sorry for the delay in my response - we just got back into town after a couple of weeks away. When I originally went out to the St. Joseph's Cemetery I was doing a favor for a friend and making notes on burials of a certain surname. Even during the survey that I did of that one name, several people stopped me and asked what I was doing, what the disposition of the information was, etc. When I called the church office later, I discussed with the gentleman the possibility of doing a survey of the entire cemetery and putting it online on Rootsweb's Tombstone Transcription Project. I fully explained the TTP and how the information would be posted. He thought it was a good idea but said he would have to check with the membership of the church first as the burial information was about their relatives. When he called me back a few days afterward, he explained that many of the members balked at having ANY information in ANY form about their surname online. I asked him if I could at least post my name as a contact point so that I could pass interested researchers along to him, and to that he agreed. If someone wanted to do a survey of the cemetery, there's nothing in stopping them. But if the information is posted online apparently the membership is ready and more than willing to do whatever they must to prevent it. That was what I was told. Having been thus warned, I don't think it likely that I will do any surveys or take any photos of the tombstones there. If the church membership is against something, I have every intention of honoring their wishes. The cemetery is a fair size. I'm terrible at guessing footages, acreage, etc. so I won't venture any guesses in that area. Hi Ed - Sorry to be so long in answering. We just got back into town. Hope this finds you doing well. The Catholic cemetery you are referring to is part of Wiley Cemetery (aka Old City Cemetery) in downtown Jacksonville. The cemetery Ann was asking about is out in Mandarin on Loretto Road at Old St. Augustine Rd. Julie From: Edgar Taylor To: Tony & Julie Howell Cc: flduval@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2007 2:10 PM Subject: St. Joseph's Cemetery - Re: [FLDUVAL] Julie Thames Howell Hi Julie - Are you are referring to the St. Joseph's Cemetery across the alley north of the Old City Cemetery in Jacksonville? Perhaps not. It has been many years since I went there but when I did it was not in very good shape, "stone wise". The discouraging thing was that many of the grave stones were piled up against the fence, some broken and probably some missing. Hopefully the church has straightened out the problems. But I was fortunate in that the grave stone of my great great grandmother Catherine (Joaneda aka Floyd) Taylor was at ground level as were her daughter Carol Taylor (Hedrick) Ochus and her granddaughter and the granddaughter's husband. In a back corner also at ground level was Carol's son Augustus Ochus and his wife, Minnie. I hope the stones are still there and still in good shape, but I would not be surprised if they are not there. That cemetery was not in a very safe area. But maybe you are referring to the cemetery near Mandarin. Ed T of PGH ------------ On May 29, 2007, at 9:24 AM, tjhowell1 wrote: > Hi Ann - I'm here. Gloria, I don't believe either of them graduated with the Class of 1951. I went back and looked into my High School Oracles and what I did find was a picture of a Harry Swindle Sophomore 1950 Oracle and a picture of a Mildred Carter as a Junior in my 1951 Oracle. This leads me to believe they may have graduated in about 1952. If a picture was missing in either year book could only mean that he/she was not at the photographers when scheduled. If you don't have these books I can scan the pictures if you would like me to e-mail them to you. Philip, I am also very interested in Edith Cowles. She was a very unique and gifted person and I will always remember how inspiring she was as a teacher. I was in her "before school" Humanities class reading all the classics, philosophy etc. She had a wonderful reading/speaking voice and would often recite poems to the class and tell us about poets she had heard read. Please let me know if you locate any of her own work. I was not aware that she wrote but would not be surprised. Thank you for the info re: Palmetto Leaves. I think of her every time I come back to Jax especially now that my Mom lives in Mandarin. I'm so glad you thought to query the list about her. Beth Learn Toronto, Ontario Philip M. Hey, Phil. I have recently been delving into the records at the Jax public library. There is a death index compiled from Florida Times Union records. Should be fairly easy to locate Miss Cowles' obituary using that and the microfilms of the paper. If no one else volunteers, I would be glad to do it next time I'm in Jax, which should be within the next month. If you are in a hurry, the people on the desk of the Florida Collection might be willing to look for it. Another idea: The Lee class of 1962 is having a 45th Reunion in July, so they have a good mailing list. Remembering teachers and coaches should be part of a reunion. Maybe someone can be found to locate obits not only for Miss Cowles (also my husband Sam's favorite teacher ever) but also others. I'm sending this to the organizers to see what they think and whether they will use their email list to solicit teacher names and memories of teachers and recruit one or more researcher-volunteers to gather the info. They may even have such an effort in the works. Best regards, Barbara Buckman Williams > From: "Philip M. Thank you very much Jon ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
I am searching for information about Edith Cowles. She was a lifelong Jacksonville resident, born in about 1914. She is deceased. Miss Cowles was an English teacher at Robert E. Lee High School and later in her life at Wolfson High School. She helped reissue Harriet Beecher Stowe's travel book "Palmetto Leaves," published by the Univeristy of Florida Press in 1999). She graduated from Lee High School in 1933 and was a classmate of my father's. She was my English teacher in high school. I am interested in her writings, if any exist. I believe she was an author. If anyone has information about her, I would be most grateful. Philip Smith College Station, Texas
Hello fellow Lee High Graduate from Humble TX... I put her name into Google and found 50 references to her and/or her books, etc. I also found several entries from Ancestry one of which was her death entry in the FL Death Index. "Edith Cowles" +Florida are the search parameters I used. If I can assist you further, let me know. Best regards, Ann Native Jacksonian living in TX --- "Philip M.
