hi susan - you are very sweet to offer to send the hartley info. actually, the ironic thing is that all of the research i've done for other people was safely stored on one of my zip disks. it was my own genealogy-information-helplist that i lost! (and i had just added some neat web site updates and some other things to it, too!) i hope that everything is going well for ya'll and that your mom and dad are doing better. thanks again, julie ----- Original Message ----- From: David L. hello list - we recently slicked our hard drive and reloaded everything. my hubby asked me if i had everything i needed on disk (i save very little on our hard drive alone) and, thinking i had gotten everything i needed on disk, said "yes". well, it turns out that i DIDN'T have everything. the genealogy information list that i have sent to quite a few folks on our duval list was NOT on one of my disks, so when the hard drive got slicked, that info list got wiped out. would one of you kind souls email me back a copy of the list? i sure would appreciate it. julie thames howell jax, fla
I am descended from Maria Louisa Falana (b. 1875) of Jacksonville. Maria was the daughter of Juan Alejandro Falana (b. circa 1850) and Laura Victoria Sidbury. Thanks VERY MUCH - Julie - for your great kindness in taking time to type out the items from the Spanish land grant info. I had forgotten that there was a reference about the Creek there - some years since I looked at these. But it does bring to my mind that one of the FL state agencies may have the maps that went with these translations. I shall have to look back to see where I got such maps many years ago. Your thought is a good one - that the creek is some where between Goodbys Lake/Julington Creek and St. Nicholas. But as I recall the topography, this covers a fairly large stretch. As I mentioned in another mesage to DI, I have a feeling that it was associated someway with Mill Creek, if not the same, though as I write this my geography of that part of South Jax is sort of vague. I very much also appreciate your asking the surveyor about this. This is not Mr. Cooker, is it? Years ago he was most kind to give me an old map of the beaches and Mayport. Many thanks again. Ed T of PGH, who at this time of the year wishes he was in Jax PS At one time, the library also had <hard copies> of both the unconfirmed and confirmed grant info... ---------- >From: Tony and Julie Howell <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] Dewees Creek >Date: Thu, Feb 22, 2001, 4:16 PM > >hi edgar - in that book i've got, spanish land grants in florida vol. l >there is a reference to dewees creek. > >on page 254: > >Pritchard, Robert, Heirs of Unc. Thanks for the try - Di. The creek has probably been <<lost to the ages>>. What is needed is a very old map of the county. I still feel it was near or part of Mill Creek. My reason for finding it is that is probably where one of the plantations of the Spanish surveyor Clarke was. His widow acquired at least part of his holdings and married my many great uncle William Dewees. Thanks again. hi edgar - in that book i've got, spanish land grants in florida vol. l there is a reference to dewees creek. on page 254: Pritchard, Robert, Heirs of Unc. P 14; G&S V 427, 428 1 (E) James Hall, for himself and other heirs of Robert Pritchard, claims 16,000 acres on Julington Creek, which empties into the St. Johns River, on the east side about 50 miles from its mouth, bounded on the north by Gunby's lands, on the other sides by vacant lands, according to George J.F. Clarke's plat of 7/20/1819, a concession of Governor White, 1010/1803, and confirmed to the heirs of Robert Pritchard by Governor Coppinger, 6/5/1818. They are in legal possession. (The substance of abstracts 2 to 4 is taken from the customary Murphy translation, the originals -- usually much more legible -- being missing.) "2 (E) (Translation.) James Hall in the name of his wife, Leonor Plummer, states that in the "past year of 1803" the government granted to Robert Pritchard, a former husband of his said wife, a permit to build a water sawmill on Dewees Creek, which document is now misland. James Hall petitions for a copy of this paper to be put in continuance of this memorial...for the benefit of the heirs, 1/9/1818. Governor Coppinger makes the grant. "3 (E) (Translation.) Robert Pritchard, for the purpose of erecting a water sawmill on Dewees Creek near the highroad that goes into St. Nicholas, on the east side of the St. Johns River, petitions for a permit and the land necessary, 10/5/1803. Governor White refers to the petition to the commandant of engineers, 10/8/1803; Barcelo assents to whatever land the governor may think proper. Governor White grants the permit and "land necessary," Aguilar attests true copy of the document in his archives, 1/10/1818. there is considerable talk, further, about the lands and creeks around the goodbys/julington creek area, and i'm wondering if dewees creek wasn't in the area between goodbys and st. nicholas, with the "highroad" possibly being s.r. 13 (or san jose blvd.) there is a surveyor in town who has some of the old, original maps of the area from the early 1800s. i have called him, but he will be unavailable until the first part of next week. i will call him back then and let you know if he has any information on dewees creek. there are also copies of the english and spanish land grants (or there used to be) on microfilm at the jax public library. have you been able to get anyone to check on those for dewees creek? julie Edgar Taylor wrote: > Does anyone know the location of Dewees Creek? Er Ed? I couldn[t find it on Topozone this morning- I did remember to go look.. The only thing I found even close to that was on the Mandarin Side of the river, just at the neck of Dr's Lake ( that would be opposite Holly Point as a reference point. ) sorry... looks like it was a wash out there... Hi there listers! I would like to know if someone could help me find out some information about a place called BATTS Hammock. It is in the vicinity of Jacksonville. It is suppose to be a legend around that area. Would appreciate any help someone could give me of where I can find out this information. I haven't found anything on it at the library. Or why, where, or when this BATTS Hammock came about. Thanks in advance. Debbie
