    3. There was a census in 1935 and 1945 and is available in the Hayden Burns Library in Jacksonville. The census is not indexed so it is difficult to find what you are looking for, especially if you are looking in the more populated areas. 2. Does anyone know if Florida took their own census, independant of the Federal enumeration? I am interested in the years between 1920 and 1950. I believe New York did this in 1925 (perhaps other years also??). If a FL census was taken, in what years did this happen and where would the records be available...Tallahassee? Did any counties take their own? I appreciate your help in my neverending quest. Thanks Rose Researching: PARSONS, MC DADE

    3. Judy, Could your Henry Von Balson be related to Richardson Von Balson? He died in 1860 and is buried in the New Berlin Cemetery along with several more Von Balsons. He was 30 years old at the time of his death. I just last month completed a survey of this cemetery and have the info which has also been placed in the Hayden Burns Library. I hope this helps! 3. You know how things come in threes? This is the third time in just about as many days that I have come across the name "New Berlin" - strange! In "Grave Markers of Duval County, Florida 1808-1916" compiled by Lucy Ames Edwards (Mrs. Ray O. Edwards) in 1955 in Jacksonville, FL, she states on page 60 that the New Berlin Cemetery "was the chief burial place of the town of New Berlin, located on Dames Point on the St. Johns River...The first burial was that of Leonard Freeland, who died Oct. 22, 1854." (This book is available at the Jacksonville Public Library, Downtown, Genealogy Dept.) The Geographic Names Information System website at http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form has New Berlin as a populated place in Duval County, FL (Latitude: 302354N and Longitude: 0813310W) and is on Eastport USGS 7.5 foot x 7.5 foot map. 1. [FLDUVAL] Spanish ship visit in 1957
    2. "The schooner Juan Sebastian de Elcano, Spanish Navy training Ship, between May 3rd and 8th, 1957, made a visit to Jacksonville, one of the ten Ports of Call in her eleven-month training cruise around North and South America. On board, around 100 midshipmen received instruction in their 4th year of their career. During those days a group of girls of a Jacksonville high school, Landon, made the life of the midshipmen easier and happier, taking them home for lunch and dinner, to school dances, to the swimming pools, etc., making the Jacksonville stay the happiest of the trip. Their beauty, kindness and how helpful they were has never been forgotten by the midshipmen of Class of '53. After 40 years is a recurring topic in every meeting. The Spanish Naval Academy Class of '53 is nearing its Golden Anniversary and, among other things, is planning to pay tribute to the kindness of that Jacksonville High School group of girls, but finding them is going to be a difficult task. " This is a quote from an email I've recently received from Ramon. If anybody reading this recalls that event, please contact either myself, Karen Foster Montgomery at [email protected], or Ramon M. de Velasco, Captain, Spanish Navy (Ret), at [email protected]

    1. Re: [FLDUVAL] burial plots- Bela Bosque Cemetery near Old Fernandina
    2. About 2 years ago my husband and I bought 2 cemetery plots from the Evergreen Cemetery while planning our pre-need package. The lots were actually paid for by us and transferred by the sellers. The Evergreen Cemetery office personnel took care of the whole transaction. They had a plat map of the whole cemetery with names of who owned what cemetery lot. For anyone interested in the Bella Bosque [or Bosque Bella ] cemetery located in Fernandina they may give it a shot to check with the cemetery office first. They more than likely have all of that information on record. Just a suggestion. Mary Hayman Kemp from Yulee, FL

    3. hi - yeah, after i'd posted that message, i wondered if all counties keep deed books of grave lots. i never think about people buying the plots and actually having a deed to them. i guess i always thought (not that i've ever given this subject a great deal of thought) that the purchaser just received some sort of receipt for the purchase, the way you would if you bought a car or other goods. might be an interesting new place to research surnames...deed books to burial lots. have a nice weekend, julie ----- Original Message ----- From: Edgar Taylor To: Tony and Julie Howell ; [email protected] Sent: Friday, April 06, 2001 11:09 AM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] burial plots- Bela Bosque Cemetery near Old Fernandina Thanks for the information. 1. [FLDUVAL] Part 3 of the Jacksonville Military Organizations
    2. Tony and Julie Howell
    3. this is a continuation of the information about the Jacksonville Military Organizations from the book "History of Jacksonville, Florida" by T. Frederick Davis: St. Johns Grays July 13, 1861, ten companies were mustered into the Confederate service at their rendezvous near Jacksonville, to form the Second Florida Infantry. Among these was company G, St. Johns Grays, organized by J.J. Daniel, the roster of which includes the names of many Jacksonville and Duval County men. Two days after the muster the regiment left by rail for Virginia. Its first battle was at the siege of Yorktown, and then at Williamsburg. After one year's service, the regiment was reorganized, on May 10, 1862. Captain Daniel resigned at this time and returned to Florida to become Colonel of First Florida Reserves. (footnote: Soldiers of Florida, official State publication) After reorganization, the regiment fought in the battles of Seven Pines, where it suffered a severe loss in officers and men, Cold Harbor, Gaines' Mills, Frazier's Farm, and Malvern Hill; it was in the Maryland campaign, fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, and in the last battles of the war in Virginia. The skeleton of the splendid regiment surrendered at Appomatox - 7 officers and 59 men. (footnote: Soldiers of Florida, official State publication) Roster of the St. Johns Grays Captains J.J.
