ok, my fuzzy little brain needs some clarification; 1. Edward Daniel Plummer's wife was Mahala F. Hartley. was it Mahala F. Hartley Plummer, or was it Mahala F. _________ and after Edward died she married one of the Hartleys? 2. are the people who found the grave marker assuming that edward is not buried in the vicinity of the marker? 3. has anyone been able to determine yet where Lawrence Plummer's farm was? 4. is the assumption that the place where the grave marker was found is not where edward is actually buried? it will be interesting to see who's names are on those grave markers that your friend took pictures of down by the buckman bridge. the "listing" of grave markers that is on the Tombstone Transcription page doesn't have any Plummers which is kinda odd since it is called the "Plummer Family Cemetery." perhaps, if for some reason mahala (and edward) aren't buried where they found the grave marker, she (or both of them) are buried in the plummer family cemetery. here's another thought. in lucy ames edwards' "Grave Markers of Duval County...", she mentions the "William Plummer Family Plot" as "the burial ground for the family of William and June Hartley Plummer. It is located on the south end of Plummers Cove, on the banks of the St. Johns River. It may be reached from Jacksonville by taking the Mandarin road." (this is the one that i believe is next to the buckman bridge.) she also mentions the "Edward D. Plummer Family Plot." the page, so i'm told, is titled "Plummer Family Plot", but she gives only the information on Edward D. Plummer's stone and says, "At that time it was on Lawrence Plummer's farm. It may be reached from Jacksonville by taking the Mandarin road." another thought; i always thought "the mandarin road" was San Jose Blvd (sr 13), and it probably was. of the roads leading off of san jose one used to be the road to the lawrence plummer farm. (my guess here would be haley rd or oak bluff ln.) julie ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2001 7:41 AM Subject: [FLDUVAL] re: Hartley According to a recent discovery, the wife of Edward Daniel Plummer was Mahala F. good morning list - to those researching the HARTLEY surname, there are two buried in the craig swamp (aka phillips) cemetery on old st. augustine rd: Frances Hartley, d. Jan 5, 1913, age 19 Joseph Alex Hartley, d. 1907, Pvt. Co. I, 10th Fla Inf julie

hi everyone - please make the following notations on your copies of our list of cemeteries/burial sites: Bigelow Cemetery - a survey has been done on this one Ferreira - a survey has been done on this cemetery Hysler - this cemetery is said to be in the southwest corner of duval county on navy property. maps show the whittaker cemetery to be on navy property, although the perimeter road and west boundary fence of cecil field stop quite a bit before whittaker cemetery. still, the question remains; are whittaker (aka Mt. Zion Cemetery) and hysler the same cemetery? Palm Springs Cemetery - a survey has just been finished on this one Parrish Family Cemetery, Parrish Cemetery Road (south of Normandy Blvd). please add this one to your list print-outs. i inadvertently left it off when i typed the lists that y'all received. Parsons Cemetery - a survey has been done on this one Smith Cemetery - a survey is done on this Stone Cemetery - a heartbreaking history has been received on this little cemetery, about tombstones having been pushed into the creek some years back in order to build a house. any and all of the information that i've accumulated from you folks is available at any time; via email, photocopies, whatever. some of it i've got on disks, other material i can photocopy and mail to you. eventually all of this info should wind up on the Florida/Duval page of the Tombstone Transcription Project. if you want to see something really neat, go to this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/florida/duval.htm and see the wonderful work that has been done by subscribers to our rootsweb lists. the number of cemeteries that are having surveys published is GREAT!

good morning everyone - on the lists that i sent out yesterday, please make two changes: 1. on St. Nicholas Cemetery #2 - please make a note that i have two surveys, not just one. 2. on Turknett Cemetery - i neglected to indicate that i have a survey on this cemetery. please make that change on your list. also, in a couple of places, cemetery names ran together as a result of getting the names arranged on the pages. if you wish to have me send you a new list with the spacing corrected please email me privately and i'll be happy to send you one. before too long i will include, on the list, driving directions to these cemeteries but, for right now, i want everyone to get back to me with any additions, corrections, etc. that you have so we can, together, compile an accurate list of the cemeteries and burial sites in duval county. i've heard back from some of you already with some information, and look forward to getting additional notes from some more of you guys. i would especially like to hear your ideas on those cemeteries where i've asked for clarification of "a/k/a" names. i would like to see surveys done for each of these cemeteries so that we can get every one of these listed on the duval page of the Florida Tombstone Transcription Project. there are about 29 surveys already done on the cemeteries on our list. these surveys are either already available on the duval page of the FTTP, or will be soon. thanks again for all of your help and input, julie

Hi Listers, I live in Pennsylvania and I would like to retrieve some obituaries from Jacksonville. I need to go back into the 1940's for a few and as late as 1992 for others. What is the best game plan for doing this? I think I have reliable death dates for the people in question. Will the public library perform newspaper obit searches? Will the Times-Union respond to such a request. Their website only contains obits back to 1997. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

"All grave sites must be afforded equal protection under the law without preference to color, creed or religious beliefs" How can someone be so ignorant as to think that "dead people have no history"? We all have a past, and it exists - even long after we have been returned to the earth. I am afraid that too many people have too little regard for 'the dead'. Prehaps like everything else in our society the views are changing. How many families take the time to go to cemeteries where their ancestors are buried and to lay fresh flowers and clean the graves? All too often, for varying reasons, it is left to the care of the cemetery. Perpetual Care Cemeteries. Perhaps because we are a transient society we have neglected to instill traditions and obligations and respect in our newer generation. I don't know the answers. As a "Devils Advocate" I can bring up this argument- that graveyards take up a LOT of ground. Our world is over populated as it is... maybe a more efficient way to deal with our human remains should be approached. Precious land lies "useless" growing grass and holding caskets and sporting weathered headstones. The land could surely be put to better use. I wonder if that is the direction that the world is moving in? Ya'll remember- the above statements are not necessarily the view of the author!! Well, enough unconnected news from me today. like you, my spontaneous side stamped its little foot and shouted, "how could they?" and my logical side (they argue perpetually) said, "well, she must really believe that when the body dies the soul goes on and, after all, dirt is dirt." i'm afraid the "dirt is dirt" approach wins all too often. but, to me, cemeteries - like funerals - are for the living. obviously once someone has died they don't care about earthly things. it is the living who go on and their ancestors who try to fit together bits and pieces of family information so that we can feel more whole; so that we can feel, in an eartly sense, like we belong to something that was, and is, and will be for many years to come. belonging is comforting. and your friend's statements speak volumes about how she feels. good for the church for picking another site. julie ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, June 06, 2001 12:34 AM Subject: [FLDUVAL] cemeteries Julie, Like you I do not understand how someone can destroy a cemetery and think nothing of it. I was discussing with a friend not to long back, about a historical cemetery in our home town that was going to be destroyed for a church. My friend felt that they should build a church on the site because, in her words "a church benefits everyone and dead people have no history and they don't benefit anyone." Now don't get me wrong, churches are a good thing, but for her to think that "dead people have no history and do not benefit anyone" was just too much! Some people have no intelligence! Good news the church is going to pick another site to build and keep the cemetery as it is. However I did wonder....... If it had been her ansesters in that cemetery would she have had different feelings about it being distroyed? She stated that she would not, her feelings would have been the same, but I do wonder.... Julie wrote.... I was looking up names on rootsweb's florida tombstone transcription pages today and saw the following item posted on one of the surveys: Note: According to several elderly ladies that were visiting the cemetery the day I was talking this census and paused to chat... "Prospect Church and Cemetery" was located in a south-westerly direction from Williams Cemetery. While they couldn't agree on approximately how many people were buried there, they did agree that "one day it was there and the next it wasn't with the tombstones dumped into the lake and a citrus grove being planted". there are a great many things in life that i do not understand. one of them is how this sort of thing can take place. it's not just the act of destroying a cemetery, but the mind-set of the person who sees nothing wrong in doing so. julie thames howell jax, fla
