I am pleased to advise you that I completed the transcription of grave markers in both the Pinkston and McCormick/Jones Cemeteries in the Whitehouse section of Duval County today. I have them on my computer and will soon forward them to the internet. I thought it best to advise you now, in case you planned to tackle this project. Jon R. Ferguson
The next meeting of the Jacksonville Genealogical Society will be held on the 21st of July and will be our annual JGS Book Browsing Day (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) in the Auditorium of the Webb-Wesconnett Library, 6887 103rd St., Jacksonville, Fl. 32210. This will take the place of our usual meeting and we will not have a speaker. We know all good researchers love to have their noses in books so Society members are asked to bring eight to ten books from their personal library...ones, which will be of interest to other members and visitors. Our meetings are free and open to the public. Visit our web page at http://users2.fdn.com/~jgs for more information concerning the Society.
hi harriett - the directions that were given me are to take Jones Road (you can pick up Jones Road at Commonwealth Ave, Old Plank Rd or W.Beaver St) going north. Jones Rd will make a sharp turn to the left. do not turn left. Magill Rd.N turns to the right. turn right onto Magill Rd.N. go a little way down Magill Rd and you will see an older white house on your left. the cemetery is behind the house off to the right. i am told, "just go up to the house and ask the folks there if you can visit the cemetery." i am also told that there is a lady that lives in a trailer in back of the house that you can talk to about the cemetery; she says she owns the property. her name is Ruby Blount Jones (the tax records have the property in the ownership of Ruby Jones) and her phone number is (904)695-2939. i have not personally been to this cemetery yet, so i hope the directions and information are accurate. please let me know how your trip out there goes. julie ----- Original Message ----- From: jangil1 To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2001 5:33 PM Subject: [FLDUVAL] Jones Cemetery Julie, Do you have specific directions to the Jones Cemetery? Hello, Could anyone help with this line? My grandmothers maiden name was Moore. She was born in the Tampa area in 1914. I was told that she may be adopted or her mother remarried, but my grandmother kept her birth name Moore. From what I gather from family information, her mother married a Carver in Jax,Fl. This Carver had a propane? or gas station? in Jacksonville. I don't remember the name of the business, but it did (I think) have the name Carver in it. My father mentioned that he was related to the Felders, Fords, & Kirbo (or) Curbow families(not sure how the last name is spelled) I don't have much information to go on, but I thought I would give it a shot. My grandmothers name was Mollie M. Moore by the way. She married Ralph Salis of Jacksonville, Fl. Any information is appreciated. Can any one help me locate a living descendant of the following family? My grandmother, Lizzie Powell Riner 1888-1986 had sister Lonie Powell 1896-1973 who married N.S.Wilson. They resided in Jacksonville most of their lives and are probably buried there. Brothers Owen Powell 1894-1962, Dewey Powell 1902-1970, and Gordon L Powell 1899-1986 were in the area also. Gordon married Maggie Beasley and I believe they had daus, Jeanette and Imogene. These were all Georgia born but went to Fla. Gordon and wife are buried back in Ga. I'm hoping some of their children may still be in the area as well. Grasping Janice Powell Whaley
Hi, I am looking for the Silas/Salis family of Duval county. I found them in the 1850 & 1880 Duval County census as Silas. I learned recently that they had changed the spelling from Silas to Salis. Are there any census records available for the years 1860,1870,1900, 1910, & 1920? If so, can I find it at the public library? Thanks for any help, Joy Spencer _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/
Good for him. Wish we could get more young folks interested in genealogy. Which cemeteries did he do? A young friend of mine (ours) adopted these two cemeteries for his Eagle Scout Project. I encouraged him and met with his Scoutmaster to seek approval. But Michael L. Freeman deserves all the credit. He went far beyond my suggestions. He even cited the Latitidue/Longitude for each grave, and took a colored picture of each marer. He has delivered to me, for distribution to the local libraries, 4 notebooks of the listings, plus an album of pictures for each cemetery, and a disk with all the data on it. He is retaining the negatives in case anyone needs a picture of a certain marker. Is he an Angel or what? He certainly deserved his Eagle Scout Badge...and he got it! Michael has submitted his data to the inter-net. The notebooks will be placed in the library of Southern Genealigist's Exchange Society, The Downtown Library, and both Family History Centers. The picture albums will be at the downtown library. We should encourage more young men to emulate this fine scout! I have a good project in case you know someone looking for one, let me know. Jon R. Please take the time today to write a letter to your Senators, your Representative, the President, the Vice-President and the Secretary of Human and Health Services. Addresses at the bottom of this e-mail. This is so important to all genealogists! The rate increase will be effective July 1st, so we don't have much time! Please write today, it will only take a few minutes to compose a letter and send it off. Copied from a post to another list: I have just discovered that the SSA is raising the price by 286% for the most valuable tool that genealogists request, the SS-5 form, Original Application for SS Number... It is going up from its present $7 to $27, effective 1 July 2001. Reference: <http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm#_Toc517745431> This is untenable, since many people who do genealogy are older retired folks on fixed income... and this large increase appears to be intended to discourage the public from access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act. How can it cost $27 to receive a request, then make and mail a copy of the one page document??? ...Government is not intended to be making a profit... The $7 seems high, when you actually evaluate the task...and Researching costs more...Could it be that they have some awfully high paid clerks...and/or interns...??? Since anything can be proven by statistics, I don't believe their "analysis" but you might want to make your representatives in Congress aware of this... Senate Addresses <http://www.senate.gov/> House Addresses <http://www.house.gov/> President George W. Bush: <[email protected]> Vice President Dick Cheney: <[email protected]> Assistant-Secretary for HHS: <[email protected]> Notify all your Genealogical buddies, too??? We all need to write...
I am seeking information on a Murray James KIRBY also known as Pottie. He was born the son of Audrey Kight Woods (later Thompkins) in the mid- 1940's and was my husbands brother. We believe he was adopted by an aunt from Jacksonville. Thanks in advance for any info. B. Woods
I am looking for any information on my husbands mother Audrey KIGHT Thompkins, born 10/11/1925 in Jacksonville. She was married to Festus WOODS of Miami on 12/11/1943. Not much is known of her family except fathers name was MELVIN KIGHT and she had 3-4 sisters. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Barb Woods

i'd forgotten i'd bookmarked this wonderful site. it's a great place to find all sorts of information. the url is: http://dhr.dos.state.fl.us/bhp/markers/markers_map.html in our recent discussions about the discovery of the grave stone of edward plummer over on haley road i was looking through some notes that i'd gathered from lucy ames edwards' "Grave Markers of Duval County" and, besides the mention of the William Plummer Family Plot and the Edward D. Plummer Family Plot, she mentions a Revolutionary Soldier's Grave with a subtitle "Dr. James Hall." she says, "This small burial plot is in a grove of trees on a bank above the Beauclerc Road, not far from the St. Johns River, in the section of Duval County known as Plummers Cove." on the Florida Historical Markers Program web site i found the following information. (i haven't figured out yet why the location of this historical marker is on Lomax Street. any suggestions as to the reason for this?) Title: JAMES HALL-SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTION / JAMES HALL-DOCTOR OF MEDICINE Location:Lomax Street. County: Duval City: Jacksonville Description: James Hall was born on October 8, 1760, in Keene, New Hampshire. Records of the Continental Army indicate that James Hall of Keene was mustered into service about August 20, 1776. Hall served throughout the Revolutionary War as an infantry soldier of the Continental Army line. New Hampshire units participated in the important campaign of the fall of 1777 which culminated in the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. Hall continued to serve with the Continental Army as it endured the winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge. On June 28, 1778, he was in the ranks of Poor's Brigade at the battle of Monmouth where he participated in the final advance of the day in that "hottest day of battle". James Hall was promoted to sergeant on April 1, 1780. He served on through the war and was present at Yorktown in October, 1781, in Col. Alexander Scammell's Third New Hampshire Regiment. When the war ended, twenty-one year old JamesHall was a full-time fighting patriot. JAMES HALL-DOCTOR OF MEDICINE During the next two decades, James Hall became a doctor. At length, he decided to move to the Spanish territory of Florida. In 1790, Dr. James Hall, then aged thirty, settled near Cow Ford (now Jacksonville). He was the first known American physician to sustain the practice of medicine in Florida. In 1803, the first settler of Cow Ford, Robert Pritchard, died. Since his arrival in 1783, Pritchard had acquired considerable land holdings. These included seven hundred acres in the Goodby's Lake region and sixteen thousand acres on Julington Creek. Within the year of Robert Pritchard's, his thirty-six year old widow, Eleanor (nee Plummer) married the fourty-four year old Doctor James Hall. The Halls made their home in what is now called Plummer's Cove. Here Dr. Hall sustained his practice until 1810, at the age of fifty, he was banished from East Florida by the Spanish for having participated in the "Florida-Georgia Rebellion." On February 22, 1819, Spain ceded Florida to the United States, and in 1822 Doctor Hall returned to what had become Jacksonville. He continued his medical practice and was active in many community matters, such as testifying at Spanish Land Grant hearings. James Hall died at LaGrange, Florida (on Plummer's Cove) on December 25, 1837. julie
good morning everyone - i found a picture in the Dept of State's photographic collection with the caption, "Grinding Cane, Roberts Plantation, Jacksonville." does anyone know where the roberts plantation was in/around jacksonville? julie
Thanks -Ernest - for pointing this out. It is good to see this available there, among other things of interest. However, what are lacking the dates for the lighthouse keeper service, which as I recall one of the MS has. ---------- >From: Ernest Jones <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] Mayport Area-lighthouse keepers and people >Date: Fri, Jun 15, 2001, 7:52 PM > >I am not sure who was looking for the Mayport Lighthouse keepers - but > >You can find a list of the keeper at: >http://www.minorcanfamily.com/ >on the left side look for and click on Research Sites >then under Florida State click on Florida Lighthouses >then look for St. Johns River Lighthouse ( that would be Mayport ) the author >includes a list of Keepers > >Good Luck >Ernest [email protected] > > [snipped]
I understand that the Seashole family owned this funeral home which was located on Riverside Avenue near the fire station. It was not sold. The business was dissolved. The records are in the hands of the family, but are not available for research. I was devasted to learn recently that it is only required that records be maintained for ten years. (Thankfully some funeral homes keep them longer). Further, the downtown library does not have the staff necessary to offer complicated look-ups. One is better off trying to get a volunteer on the FLDUVAL page. The staff at the library is very knowlegable and kind. Perhaps they would know offhand, the answer to your question. They will look up city directory entries or could tell you if they have a certain book, if you give them the title and/or author. Jon R. Ferguson
it is most probable that you will find no records from the seashole funeral home for any time period. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, June 18, 2001 7:41 AM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] Seashole Funeral Home Beth; I remember when I graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1966 that Seashole Funeral was still in business then. You might check with the Florida Times Union Archives or with the City of Jacksonville business records, such as the tax collector or business license division, or one of the present day funeral companies.
