Harriett, I saw your note about the Jones Cemetary and the Ogilvie name. There is a Jones Cemetary northwest of Callahan. I don't know if this is the one you are looking for, but the Ogilvie name is part of my line. My greatgrand father Lewis L Jones married Mary Jennette Ogilvie. They were residents of Callahan but were burried at Dyal Cemetary north of Callahan. I would like to see your information on the Ogilvies if possible. Thanks John Lunsford
Hi Julie, I found my Jacksonville map. It shows a cemetery around Ashton and Linda Dr. You can see interstate 95 at that point where it dead ends. Someone said that was Potter's field cemetery was there but I couldn't find it nowhere and I even stopped and asked questions about it in the neighborhoods. I even stopped and ask a police officer but no dice.He did tell me to get the hell out of there that I was in the murder capitol of Jacksonville area and I could be raped and killed and my van stolen.I spent over an hour looking over there but I have never been back and never will. I thought this map showed that it was Potter's field cemeteyr but I was wrong. It just shows a cemetery on it. Oh well maybe what I'm looking for is at the Beaches,Lee Kirkland Cemetery I never checked that one.It is hard to see from the road and easy to miss unless they have changed it since I was in that area years ago. Sooo much for that I guess. Hugs, Jo.
hi jo - it seems i've heard, "way back when", about there being a cemetery on the mayport base. ed taylor in pittsburgh may know something about that one since the mayport base used to be the plantation of his ancestors. ed, if you're reading this, do you have any info on a cemetery that is on the base at mayport? yeah, i know what you mean about "the good old days." my (now grown) children roll their eyes and get that "here she goes again" look whenever i start in on how "they used to do something." admittedly, i do sometimes feel like i'm dragging out my dad's "i used to have to walk through miles of snow" story. now that it think of that one, there must have been a bazillion kids walking through knee deep snow all over the place. it's a wonder they didn't all run into each other! take care, julie ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2001 9:54 AM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERIES Hi Julie, Thanks for the information, hon, most thankful for all the help. elaine - i've checked a couple of places on the internet, including FindAGrave and the Duval Co page of rootsweb's Tombstone Transcription Project, and couldn't find where the Dunn Cemetery has been survyed and posted yet. i did find one email message that reported the following: There is a Florida death index available on fiche through Salt Lake City. You might want to see if your local Family History Center has it. also, a lady named Suzanne Newell has a web site where she states that she will do lookups in the Florida Death Index, a copy of which is apparently in the Tampa library covering the years 1877-1997. you might want to check out her page at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sue9901/page2.html i have not tried the email address, so i can only presume it is still valid. hope this is of some help. julie thames howell jax, fla ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2001 9:41 PM Subject: [FLDUVAL] DUNN CREEK CEMETERY Hi, I am trying to find a grave for Robin Daughtry. Thanks for the information on Riverside Memorial. My gr grandmother was buried there and this is the first I have seen it mentioned.

To All, The City of Jacksonville once had a potter's field and the name was GRAVELY HILL. This cemetery is now maintained by Riverside Memorial Gardens. Riverside Memorial is located at 7242 Normandy Blvd. The bad news is neither Riverside Memorial nor the City of Jacksonville has any records for this cemetery. The way it was put to me was if there is not a headstone a person cannot be found. I was born and raised here in Jacksonville and all my life I have been told that the Potters Field Cemetery is where the city buries people when no family can be found. If anyone on the list has a history of this cemetery or any other knowledge of it, I would love to hear it.
According to my map it is located at the end of Owens Ave. From US90 go N on Edgewood Ave. Go L on Cleveland Rd. Go R on Owens Rd. to cemetery.
The cemetery at Jacksonville Beach you are referring to is the old cemetery where all the local black people were buried. hi joann - where exactly, from the map that you have, is the "Potter's Field" cemetery that you tried to find? there were several cemeteries in the beaches area including Warren Smith, Lee Kirkland, Beaches Memorial Gardens and Old Mayport Cemetery (aka Pablo Cemetery). Evergreen Cemetery up on north Main Street is the largest cemetery in the area with folks from all over the county buried there. And there is also the Old City Cemetery in downtown Jax. i will send you a copy of a genealogy information helplist that i've compiled that has an email address for a lady who has an index of the burials at the Old City Cemetery and will do lookups. (i will send that list by private email since rootsweb does not allow attachments.) Old Mayport Cem has a listing on the Tombstone Transcription Project's web page. it can be accessed by the following url: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/fl/duval/cemetery/mayport.txt but there are no Keller's listed on it. i do not have any contact information for the Warren Smith cem. which navy base was the cemetery on that you mentioned? we have three in this area. never too many questions. julie thames howell jax, fla ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2001 10:28 PM Subject: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERIES Hi everyone, Was wondering if someone had a county map or some kind of list that shows Potter's Field cemetery in Jacksonville. How can I get a listing of the names from the Lee Kirkland cemetery. Has this always been the name of this cemetery? I never paid much attention when I was a kid to cemeteries. Thanks again.......Jo.
Thanks Joann for the info. I have forgotten all about that cemetery across from warren smith cem. on Beach blvd. Jo.
that would be the Lee Kirkland Cemetery. ----- Original Message ----- From: Joann Bragg To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2001 10:35 PM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERIES Don't recall the name of it but there is an old cemetery across the street (Beach Blvd) from the Warren Smith Cemetery. i checked back on the directions to Live Oak Church that david gave and, from following them with my map, they do look like they go to the same place i was talking about when i gave the "map directions." it'll be interesting to find out if they are the same. there must be something about the Jones cemetery and rain. another list member, who was here from out of state, wanted to get to the Jones cemetery before she went back home but it rained and they couldn't go! hmmm.... j ----- Original Message ----- From: jangil1 To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2001 7:39 PM Subject: Re: Julie Re: [FLDUVAL] Dyal Cemetery Julie & Yvonne, I noticed after reading the response mentioning the Live Oak Cemetery that my research actually had two burial places for an individual.
