    3. hi jo - sorry for the delay in getting back to you; i'm working on a lot of new additions to my family data. the information that i have for the Lee Kirkland Cemetery is that the tax records show it in the name of the City of Jacksonville Beach. it gives the address of the cemetery as 300 Palm Tree Rd, Jax Bch. i do not have a specific phone number to call, other than calling the city hall for Jax Bch. the H. Warren Smith Cemetery is also listed on the tax rolls as being the property of the City of Jacksonville Beach. the history of the cemetery given on the Tombstone Transcription Project says, "This 18 acre cemetery has always been on land owned by the City of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. The yellow fever epidemic of 1888-1889 brought the need to convert the property to a burial ground. The name originated from the first caretaker, H. Warren Smith. The current caretaker, Ike McBride, has been in charge of the cemetery for 20 years. He was gracious enough to provide me with the plot plans of the entire 18 acres. Since all plots have been sold, and there are a tremendous number of unmarked graves, the plans helped identify plot numbers. There are 4,000-5,000 burial sites with approximately 3,500 headstones." the cemetery is bordered by Beach Blvd, Penman Rd and 2nd Ave N. five entrances divide the grounds into eleven sections. wish i could be a little more (specific) help to you on this, julie ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected]com To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2001 10:10 PM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERY Thanks Julie. 3. Yes, I often refer to the Old Mayport Cemetery as the Old Pablo Cemetery because the little settlement of Pablo and the Pablo house of the Dewees and Taylor families was nearby there long before Mayport was an idea in the mind of Amander Parsons or Gibbs, whichever called it that. My perception is that the settleent of Pablo dates back to the time the Spanish had a redoubt there to guard the entrance to San Pablo Creek. I do not recall the name Jones in Mayport, but the Mier name is familiar. I think the late Helen Cooper Floyd may have mntioned the Miers in her wonderul stories about Mayport in the <<good old days>> and some that were not so good. 1. Re: [FLDUVAL] Probate Records for Duval County
    2. Michelle Mosley Stinchcomb
    3. you would normally order the records at the courthouse. After a certain year they are in storage and you have to order them to view in the courthouse. I wouldn't recommend just ordering them to be copied and sent unless you are absolutely sure they are the records you want because it can get quite expensive. I would recommend taking the time to drive here and view them first. Most records are at least 1.00 per page and the pages can be allot. But if you view them and sort through what you need you can eliminate quite a few cover pages and other misc. items that you really don't need. Also when I was sure that I had the right name and dates and when to view that file it was still the wrong one. Imagine if I had paid for over 50 pages (it was a probate will). You could start by calling the Duval County Courthouse probate records office. I am sure they can help you further. Michelle

    3. Within the confines of the Naval air atation, there IS a xemetery buried under a plane runway not far from the light house and the Presbyterian church at Mayport. Mrs.Edwards book has a page on that one. also. . During WWII the Navy in their haste to build the base covered up alot of things. Somewhere too there is a buried slave cemetery as well as some Indian graves, so I have been told. Several months ago there was some excavation of the cemetery near the lighthouse, which uncovered one stone, so I am told. However, the digging was limited and the excavations covered because of the Navy activity. I am happy that the Old Pablo Cemetery was not taken over by the Navy. Although I have not been able to confirm this,I still believe this started as the Dewees family burial ground, as mentioned in one of the late 1800s surveys of the property. Ihis survey also mentioned the slave cemetery. However, the present Pablo cemetery is larger than the area reserved when the property was first sold about 1840. I am told the present area was given by a man by the name of Bull. If anyone knows more about this deed I would appreciate hearing, The people now in charge of the cemeery apparently know little more. Ed T of PGH PS I am not sure it was the Navy who stopped people on the jetties or the Coat Guard, That was a pretty dangerous place to be when the tide started in. Jo, you must be a very good swimmer indeed to have swum there. I know of a couple of fishermen who got trapped out on the jetties, and the Coast Guard had a tough time rescuing them. ---------- >From: "Tony and Julie Howell" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERIES >Date: Mon, Jul 23, 2001, 6:49 PM > >hi jo - it seems i've heard, "way back when", about there being a >cemetery on the mayport base. ed taylor in pittsburgh may know something >about that one since the mayport base used to be the plantation of his ancestors. > >ed, if you're reading this, do you have any info on a cemetery that is on >the base at mayport? > >yeah, i know what you mean about "the good old days." my (now grown) >children roll their eyes and get that "here she goes again" look whenever i >start in on how "they used to do something." admittedly, i do sometimes >feel like i'm dragging out my dad's "i used to have to walk through miles >of snow" story. now that it think of that one, there must have been a >bazillion kids walking through knee deep snow all over the place. it's a >wonder they didn't all run into each other! > >take care, >julie > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2001 9:54 AM > Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERIES > > > Hi Julie, > Thanks for the information, hon, most thankful for all the help. > The Cemetery I had mentioned at the Navy base is out at Mayport. 2. Harriett Ogilvie, The Live Oak Baptist Church and the Dyal cemetary are located at the same place. Maybe you already know this but Mary Jennette Ogilvie is burried there. She married Lewis L. Jones. I don't have her date of death. Lewis and Mary are my great grand parents. I am working on the Ogilvie side of the family, so I don't have all info yet. Mary Jennette Ogilvie's parents were David and Lourana Ogilvie, both burried at the Ogilvie cemetary north of the JAX airport. John Lunsford

    3. hi jo - i checked on my map and on Fred's message (below) and the cemetery you are talking about is, indeed, Pickett Cemetery. The burials for this cemetery are listed on the Duval Co page of the Tombstone Transcription Project. you may access that site by going to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/florida/florida/htm when the page opens up, click on Duval and when the Duval Cemetery list comes up, scroll down and click on the Pickett Cemetery. i've always found firemen to know considerably more about their areas than the policemen. julie >Fred McCormick [email protected] >The one at Ashton & Linda is Pickett Cemetery on Calvin Street. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2001 8:44 AM Subject: Re: [FLDUVAL] CEMETERY Does anyone have a list of those buried in the Pickett Cemetery on calvin st? 3. Hello Fred, I was wondering if you have done the family history for the McCormick side of your family? There are several dead ends in my family lineage and one is a McCormick. Catherine McCormick was born in 1815 in Georgia. She married Charles Wesley Green in 1835. Charles was born in Nassau County, FL., and I think this is where they lived, or nearby. Do you have any info. that might help. This is all I have. Perhaps I should be checking some of the cemeteries in the area.
