    1. SGES/HeritageQuest changes
    2. Ed Murfin
    3. Please note that there is a new Webmaster for the Southern Genealogist's Exchange Society Website. Ed & Bev Murfin no longer work with that site. John Johnson is the new Webmaster, and he has made some changes - so go check it out. THE WAY TO GET TO HERITAGE QUEST ONLINE HAS CHANGED ---- YOU NEED NOT GO TO ANOTHER PAGE NOW. http://sgesjax.tripod.com. On the front page of the site you will see a list of other pages on the upper right, with little purple boxes to the left of each one. Go to Heritage Quest, place your cursor on its little box, double-click and it will take you immediately to the place where you click on the HQO button, which will take you to where you fill in your password. From there everything else is the same. Don't miss the fact that our SGES meetings are at a new date and time and place, FROM NOW ON: THIRD SATURDAYS, 1:30 P.M., WILLOWBRANCH LIBRARY, ON PARK STREET IN AVONDALE, joint meetings with the Jacksonville Genealogical Society. The two societies switch off every other month being in charge of the program during the rest of 2005 (expecting possible merger before the year's out). SGES is responsible for February 19th program. The SGES program for Feb. 19, will feature Mr. Daniel Moses speaking about his part African-American, part Cherokee, part aristocratic caucasian heritage and his genealogical research. I know this man personally and have witnessed some of his family-oriented presentations. He is special. Locally, he is the manager of the Dollar Tree Store in Mandarin, and lives on the West side near the municipal golf course off 103rd St., and is a member of my church, Good Shepherd United Methodist Church out west on Normandy Blvd. He is a recognized speaker and leader on the subject of sexual harrassment in the work place and has traveled nationally on this subject, even appearing before Presidents and other leaders. He has spoken widely on genealogy, particularly African-American research in America. He's even been a missionary to Mexico at one time. His family line leads from Florida through the Carolinas to New York state. With his pictures and his writings and other displays, t! his will be a most interesting program - one of the best you could attend anywhere during Black History Month. 'See you there. 2. Tony & Julie Howell
    3. I know someone on this list is researchng Geohegan/Geohagan. While at Evergreen Cemetery (in Jacksonville) yesterday, my husband and i noticed a beautiful gravestone; a large Celtic cross. The inscription on the cross indicated it was the burial place of EDWARD MAGAWLY BANON. He was born at Broughall Castle Ireland and died at Glen-a-Veagh, Arlington, Florida. His wife's name was AGNES MANNING BANON. I was intrigued by the Glen-a-Veagh, Arlington, Florida information, so did some searching. There is an excellent web site on this family: The Geoghegans - A Family History http://www.geoghegan.org/clan/history.html that mentions Edward Magawly Banon and a chalice, one of three made in the late 1700s, that was in Banon's possession when he died in Florida in 1944. http://www.irishmidlandsancestry.com/content/family_history/families/banon.htm Irish Midlands Ancestry offers an excellent web site on "the Banon and other Ancient Irish Families." The information is "by the late Edward Magawly Banon, Esq.....Compiled by Mrs. Edward Magawly Banon (Agnes Manning Banon) 1947. Further, it says "Privately Printed in the U.S.A. by The Paulist Press New York, N.Y. 1947, Half Tones by Respass Engraving Co., Jacksonville, Florida." Julie Thames Howell Jacksonville, Florida

    3. Dear Ann - We just got back from N.C. and read of your father's passing. Your dad sounds like he was a very special person, both from his obit and from our emails over the past couple of years. Having lost my wonderful mother on December 20, 2002 I know how difficult a time this is; not a day goes by that I don't think of her and wish she was still with us. When my aunt, my mother's sister, went to church services on the Christmas Eve following my mom's death, a friend of hers gave her this poem, and my aunt sent it to me. I hope it is of some comfort to you, as it was to us. Love, Julie I Am Spending Christmas With Jesus This Year I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below; with tiny lights like Heaven's stars reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular please wipe away that tear; for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear; but the sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas choir up here. For I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring; it is beyond description to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, but please remember dear, that I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I cannot tell you of the splendor, of the peace inside this place; can you just imagine Christmas with our Savior, face to face? I will ask Him to light your spirit as I tell Him of your love; so pray for one another as you lift your eyes above. Please let your hearts be joyful and let your spirit sing; for I'm Spending Christmas in Heaven and walking with our King. ---author unknown

    1. SGES Happy New Year
    2. Ed Murfin
    3. Just a reminder a about our first two meetings of the new year: Saturday, January 8, 2005, 10 a.m., the last general monthly meeting of The Southern Genealogist's Exchange Society, by itself, maybe forever, at this date and time and at the library/headquarters location, 6215 Sauterne Drive, Jacksonville. The program will feature Dr. Ronald Jaudon "Don" Berry, PhD. He is a poet, author, and genealogist, with a specialty of Huguenot research. His topic: "Huguenots, and Jaudons's on The First Coast." Let's have a great turnout, even for historical sake. Saturday, February 19, 2005, 1:30 p.m., the first joint meeting of SGES with the Jacksonville Genealogical Society (JGS) will be held at the Willow Branch Library, 2875 Park St., in Avondale (monthly, third Saturdays, 1:30 p.m., from now on). The location will change to the Webb Wesconnett Library on 103rd St. when the remodeling is complete there. At this point, SGES leadership is responsible for the programs for Feb., April, June.... The speaker for the Black History Month program in February is Mr. Daniel Moses, from Jacksonville, who is a noted national speaker on sexual abuse in the workplace and on black genealogy. He is a store manager in the Jacksonville area. He will present a most interesting program on his genealogical research in his famous mixed-race family background. I know this man personally and have witnessed some of his presentation - he is great - you don't want to miss this meeting. Did you know that the Genealogical Dept. of the Jacksonville Public Library downtown, has become a Family History Center? This means you can order and view microfilm there just as you do at any other LDS FHC. Did you know that one of the membership benefits of SGES is the ability to sign up for the Heritage Quest research program for only $20.00? This is a great savings over individual HQ membership and is a tremendous research tool. See http://sgesjax.tripod.com for details. Willowbranch Library is going to be sponsoring a program that will be of interest to you: It is an overview of the history of the Jacksonville area (The subtitle is "Five Centuries on the St. Johns River"). Emily Lisska, the Executive Director of the Jacksonville Historical Society, will be the presenter. She will have a slide presentation or similar audio-visuals, and refreshments will be provided. The date is Thursday, January 13 and the time is 6:30 PM. The place is the Willowbranch meeting room, which should (SURELY) be completely renovated by then. Feel free to contact Richard Mott, Adult Services Librarian at Willowbranch Library if you have any questions: (381-8490 or rmott@coj.net). Information provided 1/2/05, by Ed Murfin, SGES Publicity Chairperson, edmurfin@bellsouth.net.

    2. Tom Brown
    3. Hi, I'm Tom Brown and live in St. George, Utah. I was wondering how I can request archive copies of obituaries from the Times-Union. I e-mailed them on Friday and they said that they don't keep anything before 1997 and to check with the Jacksonville Public Library. Will the Library be willing to mail obituraries found in their archive ? Or is there someone who can do a lookup for me? I will be willing to pay copier and postal fees and negotiate the cost of research.
