I am forwarding today's statement from the Florida Library Association. Please make note of several things: * the proposed relocation cost that must be voted into the budget is $5. million dollars over 3 years (could be read as $7. million but believe it is $5. million) * that Nova Southeastern University (a private institution) will take over ownership of these books Not included in this statement: * the president of Nova has already stated that if additional funds are necessary they will expect them from the State of Florida. * The mention of how much the renovations of the offices that Glenda Hood will occupy in the R. A. Gray building are going to cost or where the funding will come from. They moved people out of these offices several weeks ago. Leslie We were at the press announcement of the so-called "deal" this morning -- armed with fact sheets about the special collection and more importantly with Dr. William Summers [former State Librarian, former president of ALA, and former Dean of the FSU School of Information Studies] who very ably provided the opposing viewpoint to reporters covering the story. Thanks to the terrific grassroots efforts of FLA members and the countless emails to media and lawmakers -- reporters are asking all of the right questions. The position of the Gov's office is that the only legislative approval they need is approval of budget dollars ($2 million this year and total of $5 million over three years) to pay for transfer. So not only are they giving away public asset of $10 million to a private institution, they are paying them to take it. There was a lot of focus on the existing "public/private" partnership with Broward County Library, but they did admit that the materials would no longer be the property of the state and would in fact be the property of Nova. When Nova President Ray Ferrara was pushed by reporters to discuss where Broward County Commission on this and to respond to reports that the Commission in fact is looking at a resolution against moving the collection -- he said he certainly had been in contact with County officials -- but then said "This is Nova Southeast's Library. It is our building. It is on our property. We feel we can go forward with this." So much for "public/private partnership." Ken Dentzner likens this to the customary "weeding" of collections that goes on all of the time. They are of the position that this collection is just like anything already available at most public libraries, nothing special. And they put a great emphasis on circulation numbers in Broward and the huge numbers of "card-carrying" citizens who will now have access by locating in this great state of the art facility. Glenda Hood says she has great fondness for libraries and is "so enthusiastic (about that aspect of her job) she decided to locate her office in the Gray Building" to be close to history. They reiterated savings comes from terminating 42 employees --- they are very weak on the numbers when pressed to show how these savings actually add up. Again, reporters are asking all of the right questions and this is a direct reflection of the grassroots efforts of all members to keep the media informed. This active support will be vital in the coming weeks as we demonstrate to lawmakers the tremendous support across the state for Saving Your State Library. Pam (by proxy) Alvie L. For those of you interested in what is going on with the Florida State Library here is an announcement that was made this afternoon after it was too late to rally people. Also, it is assumed from the private meetings illegally held (do not meet the Sunshine laws exemption) that the collection will go to a private university - Nova Southeastern University in Broward Co. There has been some investigation done on the trustees and it was quite enlightening!! For those of you interested in the Florida State Archives, their funding comes through the Florida State Library and there is no funding for them in the current budget proposal.
