    3. I haven't been following this too closely but did go to the rootsweb site and noticed that Broward charges $10.00 for death certificates after 1990. All death certificates from the Florida Department of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville are $5.00. They have a quick turn around time and you will save $5.00 if it is after 1990. I am clifford's niece and to hear the story about how my late grandparents was notified of cliffords death brought tears to my eyes. and to think how one cared to remember...This is why I am inspired to do my family history. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EZ.2ADI/1111.1 Message Board Post: Dear Pamela Some initial research could be done online. You could “Ask a Librarian”. Please inform the Librarian of all info you know so far, including where you obtained date of death: http://www.broward.org/library The Librarian could look in old city directories of Fort Lauderdale, for 1951 and several years which might be relevant. If possible, supply the name of the AREA in Fort Lauderdale, such as “Pompano”, “Sunrise”, etc., as there are multiple separate directories. Listing may have been under the name of husband, listing wife’s first name, and occasionally children are named. There may have been a news item in one of two local newspapers, about the military death. Such an article might be searched in the microfilms, perhaps more than should be asked of a Librarian. Genealogical Society might do such a search in return for modest donation. Your subject was not found in SSDI (Social Security Death Index), but you could still apply to the Social Security Administration for records: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi Military files can be requested from NARA: www.archives.gov/records_management/index.html Two types of file exist, “Military” and “Pension”. To find information online, you would need to contact some specialist web sites. You could look on various search engines, for list of KOREAN War DIAs. One of these is www.askjeeves.com Do you not know any relatives of your subject, who have personal knowledge? Ruth

Helen Bornholz Britt did die Oct. 31,1960 in Broward County, Fl, but is not in SSDI because she never worked outside her home. Yes, I recieved her death certificate and got her maiden name from my one and only Britt cousin, my father's sister's daughter, Gail. While searching for my aunt Judy, Gail got in touch with me to let me know she died, in Oct. of 2002. My father is still missing, but alive and doesnt' even know his sister died. I'll never give up the search! You take care and thanks again for all you do for everyone!

The relevant date was long before computerization of newspapers, circa 1982-1985. Two web sites might lead to some help: http://www.rootsweb.com/~flbrowar/howto.html First you will find where to send your $5 for a death certificate. Secondly, you will be able to find "Sun Search", which is connected with Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel newspaper (formerly had different name, Fort Lauderdale News, perhaps.) The archives of Miami Herald newspaper --- no longer do searches prior ot 1982. http://www.heraldstore.com/research.asp Ask a Librarian --- written queries, for obit and/or article --- phone and/or mail to Broward County Library: http://www.broward.org/library At least you should receive some further suggestions. Ruth If you become desperate, I might find someone who would do a special look-up for a modest donation.

You should state dates of birth and death, as nearly as possible. The death certificate will give the cemetery, and much more information. Next are a few records in Broward Court --- I cannot explain the meaning of the cases other than your father was Plaintiff in one case, and Defendant in another case. He apparently was still living in 1998. There is no Probate case mentioned, meaning he must have had a Will or Trust. Lastly is a fee-charging web site. Rather tedious process, but it works. If you are not in too much hurry, let me know the name and I will ask a friend who lives near the Library. She usually receives a donation of $10 for lookups.
