Hi Jim, I really like the one where we can look to see what county a town is in. I already tried it out. Thanks for this and for all you do for everybody. Marion
Hi List ... thanks to Pam Carey Durstock and Rootsweb I have added a couple of new tools to the main Alachua County page. If you like them I'll add them to Gilchrist and Bradford. One is for finding the county a town is in. If you don't include a state it will find all similar named towns in the US. If you try a town from our area that isn't in there, let me know. I'll work up a list and try and get them added. The other is a Soundex Code generator. They are near the bottom of the page. Let me know what you think. http://www.rootsweb.com/~flalachu/ Jim
Does anyone have any information on John Ponds and wife Nancy Kittler and his son, Wm. Samuel Ponds who married 3 time to all Sarahs. I am particulary interested in his 1st wife, Sarah E. Gieger, Ellis. She was married to a Charles Ellis in 1877 and Charles died between 1877 and 1880. I am desperate for his death date. Sarah had an estate with a plantation and left it to all her Gieger children when she died as Sarah E. Ponds. Thanks for any info you might help me with. Please e-mail me at: Thanks Jeanne jlinc12317@aol.com
Dear Papaw, Congratulations!! Even though it happens countless times every day, each birth is a miracle. I'm so glad for you that you got to be part of that moment. A huge "Welcome" for little Taylor, and very best wishes to all who are so blessed to know her. Jennifer p.s. Papaw, please don't waste a minute with your characteristic polite reply ... spend those moments kissing your girls instead. :-) >Hi list... I am a brand new grandpa.
Hi list... I am a brand new grandpa. We left for the Birth Center between 8 and 9 last night, Taylor Elizabeth was born at 2:05 and we were all back home at 6:05. She missed our 25th Wedding Anniversary by just over 2 hours. This proud grandpa hasn't heard her cry more that twice since they finished measuring her and all of those other little nasties that they treat newborns to (and she was really good through all of that). When she has cried it has been only long enough to let you know she wasn't quite happy. She weighed 7 lbs 1 1/2 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long, and yes I was in the room when she was born, as was both grandmothers, and our other pregnant daughter. Do you remember what Forrest Gump's Mom said "Life is like a box of Chocolates", I got a good one today. Grandpa (Papaw) Jim
Hi List... I am looking for a little help. I don't know how many of you have seen the information on the Alachua and Gilchrist County sites, but there is quite a bit there. Most of it has come about with the assistance of those researchers on those mail lists as well as those that stop by the website. So what I'm asking is do you have anything you would like to share that we could place on the page? Is there anything you would like to see on the page that you might be able to help with? I'm listening, Jim
ondering if anyone has access to the FL 1885 census and could look up MM HALE on pg 130? TIA, JT
Hi List members... I have added two entries to my ALHN History Site. First by Peggy Munroe an article on the death of her Robert E. Arnow, and second, a "Deed" from the Ancient Record Book that has a little story all it's own, A moment in the life of John H. McIntosh Jr. http://www.rootsweb.com/~flalachu/Alhn/ Have a great day, Jim
Hi List members... I have been very busy lately. But that didn't stop me from taking on a new challenge. I am starting a page for the American Local History Network for Alachua County. I might spread out to other counties (BTW... most Florida Counties can be adopted), but in it's earliest form Alachua County included many present day counties. Please check our http://www.rootsweb.com/~flalachu/Alhn/index.html and especially my little composition on Moses Elias Levy and let me know what you think. Thanks, Jim
Hello Bradford county researchers, Does anyone know how the Mt. Sinai Cemetery off 18 near Graham was started? Was it a church? Old homeplace? Also, does anyone know the location of a now extinct town by the name of Bellamy, out from Graham over in Alachua county? Said to be an old turpentine town? It was the name given by my grandmother as my father's place of birth on his birth certificate. She filed an affidavit to that effect. My father was born in 1914 and always told us the town was gone now. Any help is greatly appreciated. Linda Dyal Johns in Lake City
Hi List members... There is a new way to add your Florida Cemetery listings to a searchable database. Whether you have one or many you you can enter them here. A good friend and fellow FLGenWeb County Coordinator, Marceline Beem, has set this up for FLGenWeb. http://tn-3.rootsweb.com/~marce/florida/cemetery.html Jim
Hi list members... I have been requested to pass on this message about a new list. So here it is... Jim Would you announce to your list that there is now a list that covers the area that includes the southern counties of Georgia, the northern counties of Florida and southeastern Alabama WIREGRASS-L-@rootsweb.com thanks Bill FishPatmos@aol.com Listowner
I am interested in Robert Lee Shaw and Priscilla Sistrunk Shaw, These were my Fathers parents and he was born in Lake Butler,Fla in 1896 . I understand that the county was changed and that Lake Butler is now in Union county. Since my Father was born in Bradford county and all the records should show so will Bradford county have my fathers birth certificate or will Union county? If some one can answer that I would forever be beholding. Thanks Ed Shaw Living in Texas
Hi, I'm researching the families of Azmon Bell "A.B." SIMMONS (b. 24 Jul 1854, GA; d. 18 Mar 1915, Alachua Co., FL) and his wife, Martha Susan ABBOTT (b. 2 May 1854, Boston, Thoams Co., GA; d. 5 Aug 1944, Blackshear, Pierce Co., GA). A.B. & Martha were married in December of 1873 in Bradford Co., FL. By 1880 they were living in Alachua Co., FL. Martha was the daughter of James ABBOTT & Susannah (Harriet) MELTON who married in Thomas Co., GA in 1843. James moved his family to the New River/Bradford Co. area c1857. Susannah d. c1865 and James married twice again ( Nancy --?-- and Emily --?--) before he died in the early 1880s. Martha's siblings known to have resided in the Bradford Co. area are: William H. (b. c1844), Harriet (1845), Frances (1847), James (1849), Nancy (1851), Catherine (1856), Ella (1858), Sarah (1861) and Emma (1863). Martha's half-siblings: Margaritte (1873), Lewis (1874) and William (1880). A.B. was the son of Samuel B. SIMMONS and Martha Jane WHITFIELD who married in Thomas Co., GA in 1846. Samuel was killed in 1860. I'm not sure when/if Martha moved to the Bradford area. I have not found any evidence of this family between the 1860 census of Jefferson Co., FL and A.B.'s marriage in Bradford Co. in 1873. I would very much like to know what became of his mother, Martha, as well as his siblings: Thomas (b. c1847), John T. (1848), Harvey (1849), William (1851), Isaac (1856) and Henry (1857). I have quite a lot of information on the ancestors and descendants of these families and would love to find an interested researcher with whom to share it. Kind regards, Jennifer Jacksonville, FL jennifer@leading.net Proud RootsWeb Sponsor+ Join us at GATHOMAS-L, ABBOTT-L, STANALAND-L
Hi List ... I would like to introduce myself, my name is Jim Powell Jr and I have just taken over ownership of this list from Melanie Cox. I want to think Melanie for all of her hard work and for allowing me the opportunity to work with Bradford County. I have also started coordinating YOUR Bradford County FLGenWeb Page. Yes, it is your page... I hope as time goes by, we will add a lot of new data to the page. To do this I need your help. If you are on one of my other lists, you know what I mean. If not check out our Alachua or Gilchrist County sites and you will see many names other than mine are on the pages of information that have been submitted. I have added GenConnect Boards to the page. If you have a query on the old Query Site, please take a moment to add it to the GenConnect Query Board. As soon as I get a moment, I'll be writing to everyone with a query on the old query page about the new board. Enjoy, send me ideas on new additions to the page. I am here to help you make this site the best it can be. Hello, You are invited to join the RootsWeb-sponsored mail list STANALAND-L, a list dedicated to discussion of STANALAND families (and all variations of spelling) in any place and at any time. To subscribe, send a message to STANALAND-L-request@rootsweb.com (for mail mode) or to STANALAND-D-request@rootsweb.com (for digest mode) that contains (in the body of the message) the command subscribe and no additional text. Realizing that STANALAND researchers (and researchers of variant spellings) constitute a fairly small group in terms of the usual RootsWeb mailing list membership, your interest and participation will be especially important and appreciated. So please join us! Warm regards, Jennifer Jacksonville, FL jennifer@leading.net
To All Whom It May Concern: This message is to inform all genealogists, researchers, historians, teachers and students, about a very important web site that has a searchable database of over 1, 650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers fought in the Florida Indian Wars, and the went on to fight in the Mexican War and the Civil War. The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, under his command and/or his responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by quantity. HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has made available, free of charge, the names of all officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see Barracks Notes) who lived at this federal military post located on the Niagara Frontier. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data for Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," as well as a wealth of information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com
I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; gme@nwinfo.net and ; sj@censusmicrofilm.com I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin researching ; Sartin , Sartain , Sarton , Sarten , Sardin etc. etc.
