He will also show an amazing use of the X chromosome in tracing ancestry, since the X chromosome doesn't pass down to us the way autosomal, Y and mtDNA do. He will cover one of the popular sites for autosomal matching - "23AndMe." He will cover how to tell whether autosomal DNA testing will help in genealogical research or whether it would be a waste of time at its current state of development. He will introduce GEDMatch, a free site where one can upload one's 23AndMe or FamilyTree DNA results for special testing and for matching across several DNA sites. This overlay technique works for both urban and rural settings, as well as using Google Earth Street View to view current locations. By getting latitude/longitude coordinates, a visit to the sites would be possible. Attendees can download Google Earth to their laptops, and a map of interest to their desktops, and follow along during presentation. Jeff's background: He is a retired Marine Corps helicopter pilot, BS degree in geography, Master’s degree in computer resource management. Plus a six volume set Directory of Virginia Landowners in 1815 and a complete set of Virginia Soldiers 1776. Browse the military collection: four shelves of Revolutionary and pre-Revolutionary military books, with twelve shelves of volumes on the Civil War: 3 shelves of Union and 9 of Confederate. For the individual states, there are 14 shelves of books related to Virginia families, including individual counties and the 1787 census (three volume set). Georgia occupies 22 shelves; Alabama 23. South Carolina overflows with information: land transactions, marriage records, court records; the Leon Hollingsworth collection. He was a certified genealogist who spent over thirty years travelling the southeast, recording genealogical data on cards. We have the complete 12 reel microfilm collection of his records. The similarities between African American and European research techniques are surprising and the differences quite minor when looked at in detail. Even if one has no African ancestors, this presentation will hold techniques that he will find immensely helpful in doing pre-1850 European research. After the Power Point presentation, those interested in tracing their ancestry will go to the genealogy library across the street for individual assistance researching. The West Florida Genealogical Society regrets that Megan Smolenyak has cancelled her appearance in Pensacola on Nov. 3 due to the fact that she is in the Philadelphia area and in the path of the impending storm, "Sandy." We are very sorry but feel it is the prudent thing to do. All those who have already registered will be refunded or their checks returned. You will be contacted, soon. Mrs. Smolenyak suggested shemight be able to come in February, 2013, but we will have to start all over with plans. There will not be a meeting in November. If you have questions, let us know.
