Dr. Greg Waselkov, Director and Professor of The Center for Archaelogical Studies at the University of South Alabama, will discuss current efforts to produce detailed documentation of the Old Federal Road’s actual path through Alabama, as it ran between Milledgeville, Georgia, and Fort Stoddert, Mississippi Territory. This project is using survey plats, surveyor notes, correspondence, historical documents, and travelers’ accounts, plus GIS mapping, to overlay old maps, locate the original road, and meet and document the people who lived along the path. Speaker: Michael Hait, via recorded webinar The first step of the Genealogical Proof Standard is to complete a reasonably exhaustive search for all relevant records related to your research objective. This presentation discusses what a reasonably exhaustive search constitutes, why this is necessary, and how to conduct a search. A case study explores how failing to identify all relevant records can lead to missing information and forming inaccurate conclusions about your ancestors‘ lives. This month’s program will utilize a recording of a national webinar presented by Michael Hait, a full-time professional genealogist, with over fifteen years of research experience across the United States. His specialties include Maryland research, African American genealogy, and records of the Civil War and Reconstruction era. The Bureau was established to assist disadvantaged people, black and white, and issued rations and clothing, operated hospitals and refugee camps, and supervised labor contracts. There is a good chance that anyone’s post-Civil War southern ancestor might be found in records of the Freedmen’s Bureau. Diane Richard is a professional genealogist, owner of Mosaic Research with 26 years’ experience. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, an editor of UPFRONT with NGS and of the blog for the National Genealogical Society. There will be a handout. He will discuss survey methods and terminology used to describe property in deeds. Also included will be tract books, with examples, to illustrate when land was transferred from government to individuals, and the use of deed indexes. The goal of the group is to promote Genealogy with the recording of Pioneerâs and their descendantâs while also preserving and recording Cumberland Gapâs history. Mr. Merritt has been a popular presenter with WFGS members. His programs provide practical and easily understood methods for all genealogists.
