"Eliza" Downing fit into my husband's family of Downings from Alachua County. When was your Mary E. born? There is a Mary E. Downing, daughter of Thomas W. Downing, who was born abt 1854 while the family was still living in Alabama. Her name is listed as Mary E. in the 1860 census and as Eliza in 1870. Could she be the wife of Ira Belton Huggins? There is an gravestone at Spring Hill Cemetery in Alachua County for Ira F. Huggins. I think he is the son of Ira Belton and Eliza. I have not found the parents' graves there. If Thomas Downing is indeed the father of your Eliza, I can help you with his ancestry. My husband is descended from Thomas's brother, Joseph S. Downing. I have a list of the seven daughters of Thomas and am just beginning to research them.
