    1. Field Notes
    2. Jim Powell
    3. New book online, Field Notes. There are no dates on, or in this book. It does seem to be fairly old, the paper is crude and canvas backed. There are 2 views of each Township/Range block. Some of them contain landholders names. The pages are listed by Township/Range. I do apologize for the images. It takes a lot to keep the camera level and even with the pages and even more difficult to keep the pages in this book flat. Most of the lines in the book are straight. You'll understand when you see the images. I did keep the color in the images. I thought that the look was well worth the extra download time. The larger images are PDF with this book rather than GIF, so you'll need the Acrobat Reader to view the large images. http://www.clerk-alachua-fl.org/Archive/AncientJ/FrontPage.cfm?BID=299 Jim Jim Powell Jr Ancient Records Coordinator & Webmaster Alachua County Clerk of the Court Http://www.clerk-alachua-fl.org/archive/default.cfm Online Volunteers Wanted... http://www.clerk-alachua-fl.org/Archive/CFDocs/VolunHelp.cfm

    1. 1885 Census lookup??
    2. Is there a 1885 (and 1890??) census for FL? If so, would someone do a lookup for me? On: William Allen Pendarvis (born during the 1860 -1868 years, I heard William "Allen" was adopted by the ? Robertson or Robinson family). And his brother, Joseph James (aka JJ / Jimmy/Joe) Pendarvis/Pindarvis, b 1866 FL. Both lived in Alachua County, FL in 1880 and maybe living in household of J. Exley or M. Exley. thanks so much. pat kendrick_@webtv.com

Virtual Bouquet for Floridian Jim Powell Virtual Bouquet for Floridian Jim Powell By Sheila Casper from Fairbanks, Alaska   Casperfamily@mosquitonet.com I want to acknowledge and honor Jim Powell for the major contribution he has made to Internet genealogy and family history research. Powell is the coordinator for the FLGENWEB counties of Alachua, Bradford, and Gilchrist counties. In addition he is the Florida assistant state coordinator for FLGENWEB. And, if this was not enough. he changed careers and became the "Ancient Records" coordinator and webmaster of Alachua County, Florida: http://www.rootsweb.com/~flalachu/ His real talent is in motivating people. He has amassed an army of Alachua County, Florida volunteers from all over the United States who have transcribed thousands of pages of documents. Most of these records were unavailable for research, even at the county courthouse, until Powell, with the valuable assistance of the Clerk of the Court, J. K. "Buddy" Irby, made the major commitment of getting the records scanned and online. Some of the Alachua County, Florida records that Powell has scanned, posted, and encouraged volunteers to transcribe (or transcribed himself) include: --Indexed, transcribed, and posted the 1850 and 1860 census. --Maps. --Located old settlements and posted their histories. --Transcribed and posted Deed Books A and B. These are some of the very earliest records of the area. He also made an index for five of the early deed books, and volunteers are transcribing the pages. --Coordinated many volunteers who transcribed the DAR cemetery survey. --Scanned and placed online all marriage record books (1837-1923). Coordinated volunteers to transcribe these records so that they would   be searchable. --Scanned and placed online many, many probate files from the earliest times. These probate files are incredibly detailed and are valuable for genealogists and history buffs alike. He created a very user friendly template so that transcription is easier. Volunteers have transcribed many of these images so that they can be searched. --Transcribed the county's first County Commission Book. --Scanned and placed online delayed birth certificates books, bill of sale books, and mortgage books. The above records are all easily searchable thanks to the great search engines Powell has created. As I have researched my HAGUE, LIPSEY, and TIDWELL families in Alachua County, Florida I have gained much insight into their lives from 1825 on. The probate file on my ancestor, John HAGUE or HECK contains about 50 pages. I have learned so much about this family through these records. And, since it was filed under HAGEN, it is doubtful that I would have found it at all if it had not been for Jim Powell. Every time he finds another "HAGUE sighting" he e-mails me. I know he does this for many other researchers. He has my undying gratitude for his service to me and, indeed, everyone researching in Alachua County, Florida.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BZ.2ADI/679.1 Message Board Post: If any of these folks have passed away and you at least know the year of death, you can order death cetificates from the state of Florida. The death certificate will give you parents names. I would then look for an obituary for these folks to get names of surviving relatives and possibly a little biographical information for these folks. Do a search on the internet, you can find the states website to get information for ordering death certificates. If you don't know year of death, do a search for the LDS's (Morman"s) website. At thier website you can do a search of the social security death index. The S.S.D.I. will give you all names that come close to what your looking for and gives dates of death, but I would still order a death certificate in order to get more accurate information. Lot's of sources out there, do a little surfing on the internet and you can find all kinds of stuff. The chances of relatives seeing your query are slim to none, so you're gonna have to do a liitle work to find the answers. Hope this helps Chris

I am interested cause that name is very prominant in my Tillis line. My Levi Wayne Tillis (his dad Wain Tillis found on 1850 Cencus-Alachua Co.) was born in Waldo, Alachua Co. and married Henryetta Ayers whose mom was Jane Reed Tillis. They had a son named William Reed who was born in Clay Co, Fl. Many of William's siblings named their sons Reed(Reid) and they did the same. Surely there is a connection.

    3. Hi list ... We are now up to Deed Record 51 online. This brings us up to the year 1900. We also have the grantor side of the deed index books online for the same timeframe. I am working on Record of Physician's Certificates 1. I have started working with the images and placing them online. I have Deed Record 52 about half scanned. Should be online tomorrow I am in the process of photographing Judgment Book B. The counter on the sheet feeder went over 30,000 yesterday. The scanner scans both sides of the page, so that equals over 60,000 images. That doesn't count the many fragile pages that have been scanned with the flat bed option. I have also taken over 2,000 photos with the camera. Volunteers have now indexed over 24, 768 marriages and entered 12,984 entries into the Deed Index.
