    1. Dr. Samuel Edwin Norton 1815SC-1877Gainesville
    2. Hello Gators and others, I would like to find other descendants of my great great grandfather, DR. SAMUEL EDWIN NORTON b. May 8 1816 SC d.1 Oct 1877 Gainesville. His first wife was my great great grandmother, JULIA JUSTINA ALSTON of Halifax North Carolina. After Julia died in 1867 Montgomery, Alabama where they had lived since the 1850s, Dr. NORTON (whose children were grown)moved to Gainesville and married a widow. Her name was MRS. SHELTON (unfortunately, I do not know her first name) They had one daughter that I know of: LEONORA NORTON b.June 8 1872. I have no idea whether she ever married. MY ancestor was JAMES HUDSON NORTON of Montgomery (2nd Lt CSA: Alabama First Cavalry) who m. ALLIE LOVE GREENWOOD of Columbus, Ga and Montgomery Al. Dr. NORTON was both a physician and a Methodist Episcopal minister. He preached at St. John's Church in Montgomery. I do not know if he preached actively in the Gainesville area. Any help locating descendants, would be appreciated, Caroline Burnett Cook (Carole)

    1. The 'Original' Lorenzo Dow
    2. Sue Cook
    3. Hi Everyone! Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the 'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. (He was born in 1777 and died in 1834.) Well, I ran home from work and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too! The site is: http://www.acun.com/dentons The link to the article about Lorenzo Dow is about half way down the first page. I hope you enjoy the stories! Blessings! Sue Montgomery-Cook

    3. The 1850 and 1860 Alachua Co. Censuses are now online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~flgilchr/1850acc/CENSINDX.HTM and http://www.rootsweb.com/~flgilchr/1860acc/CENSINDX.HTM . I am adding annotations to these censuses. If you have information on anyone in these censuses that you would like added, please send it to me at [email protected], and I will include it with the next update. BTW... The index page of each census is quite large and can be slow to load. The individual pages can be accessed by using http://www.rootsweb.com/~flgilchr/1850acc/1.HTM or http://www.rootsweb.com/~flgilchr/1860acc/1.HTM . Insert the page number you are looking for where the 1 (for page # 1) is. HTM must be capitalized. If you find any obvious mistakes please let me know. 3. My 2 g grandfather was a confederate soldier from Fla--Archelaus Hague from Alachua county. In talking with the Fl archive people in Tallahassee, they tell me that I cannot order his military records. I have to hire a researcher to go and find the records and make a copy. They cannot do this. Can this be true? I have requested and received confederate records from Mississippi, Georgia, SC with no problem. They tell me if they have the records and how much it will cost. Does anyone know anyone in Tallahassee I can hire to do this job? He did not receive a pension so he is not on that database list, but I have found him and his military regiment in a book. Sheila from Alaska [email protected]

    3. I have the following note in a GEDCOM about my GGGrandfather. I am wondering if there is any County history or other documentation that can give me any more information on him (or family) and to verify his being a County Commissioner. Family tradition is that he was one of the first State Legislators as well. "Samuel B. COLDING and family came to Florida about 1843. Samuel was a County Commissioner when Newsnanville, an early settlement near present day Gainesville, was the county seat of Alachua. 1850 census lists Samuel as 50 years of age with personal property value of $1,000."
