    1. Alachua County Obituary Lookup Info
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BZ.2ADI/646 Message Board Post: First you should check the Alachua County message board, or the county board where the person lived. Some of the boards have volunteers that will do lookups. Post a message and maybe someone will respond. Most libraries have back issues of newspapers for their local area, and some will do a lookup for a dollar or two and the cost of postage and printing, if you have the exact date of death. You may want to check and see if the library has a website and/or write them a letter to see if they will do a lookup. If all else fails, I will do obituary lookups for Alachua County and other counties in Florida. I live in Gainesville, FL, the home of the University of Florida, which has microfilm copies of newspapers from all over the state. I'll need the exact date of death, and the county where the person died. If all you have is the month and year from the social security death index, you should send off to the state for a death certificate, which will give the exact date of death, and location, not to mention all kinds of other valuable information…. funeral home, cemetery, parents names, next of kin, etc. I have often found the social security death index information to be inaccurate, as far as the day, month, and location is concerned, and I have missed finding an existing obituary because of this. The year of death from the S.S. index is normally correct and this is all you need to order a death certificate. You get one buy sending $5.00 to: State Office of Vital Statistic! s, Attn: Customer Service, Post Office Box 210, Jacksonville, FL. 32231-0042 If you would like me to do an obituary lookup, please e-mail directly for more information. I have a book which has at least some of the children of William and Eliza Downing listed, don't know if it has all of them. It will take me a little time to check it out. However, I do know William's parents, just in case this is the right line for you. William was the son of Joseph Downing (1777-1835) and Mary Ann Wells (1777-1835). I will get back to you on the children. ~J. Downing~

Downing -- Thank you so much for your prompt response. I believe you have put me on the right track. Ira Belton Huggins who married Mary Elizabeth (called Eliza) Downing had a brother, George Samuel Martin Huggins, who was born SC (1836) and served the Confederacy from Alachua County, Florida as Martin Huggins. He married Lydia Downing b.10 Jul 1845 Montgomery, Alabama, d. 24 Jan 1916 Williston, Levy, Florida. Martin and Lydia named two of their children -- Hester Eliza (Martin's mother was Hester, and it appears that Lydia's mother was Eliza; and George William (Martin's father was George and Lydia's father was William? I don't know how Lydia and Eliza are connected, but feel sure they are. My records on Ira Belton and wife, Eliza, are less complete than those of his brother. Any ideas at this point will be greatly appreciated. Do you have record of William and Eliza Downing's children? Thanks again for the input. Sara

Where in Alabama was your Mary Elizabeth Downing born? If it were Montgomery County, the chances are good that she was connected with William H. Downing (b. 1805 SC, d. 1870) who moved to Montgomery County, AL from SC. Members of this family later moved to Alachua County, FL so, it sounds like there could be a connection here. The wife of William was Eliza M. (b. 1809, d. 1869). Hope this helps. ~J. Downing~

    2. Some time back I had a Baker Email list on Genweb.net. That site has disappeared and is no longer accessible. I have missed the interaction of Baker and Allied lines in our quest to find our roots. When we attempt to post to the other Baker lists, we seem to get lost in the shuffle; so I decided to start another group for our Southern Roots. I do believe that our Bakers who were in VA and NC very early are probably connected in some way. If you are researching BAKERS from this area, please feel free to join us. I have left the option of open membership as long as we don't have a lot of problems with Spam. I like the open membership and open post format so that we can all be relaxed and feel free to post what we feel pertains to our research, including collateral families. Additionally, Yahoo gives the option of accepting attachments which will be virus checked. Still, I would recommend to all to be very careful when accepting attachments, or at least keep your anti-virus software updated. Don't be shy. If you have BAKER connections who were in VA (especially in areas of Isle of Wight, Elizabeth City County); NC (especially Chowan, Bertie, Wake, Edgecombe, Hertford, Orange); SC, GA, AL, FL, LA, and points west, join us. And feel free to invite others with the same interests. 1. I Do Obituary Lookups
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BZ.2ADI/644 Message Board Post: First you should check the message boards for the county where the person lived. Many of the boards have volunteers that will do a lookup for the cost of postage and printing. Post a message and maybe one will respond. Most libraries have back issues of newspapers for their local area, and some will do a lookup for a dollar or two and the cost of postage and printing, if you have the exact date of death. You may want to check and see if the library has a website and/or write them a letter to see if they will do a lookup. If all else fails, I will do lookups. I'm fortunate enough to have access to microfilm copies of newspapers from all over the state. I'll need the exact date of death, and the county where the person died. If all you have is the month and year from the social security death index, you should send off to the state for a death certificate, which will give the exact date of death, and location. You get one buy sending $5.00 to: State Office of Vital Statistics, Attn: Customer Service, Post Office Box 210, Jacksonville, FL. 32231-0042 If you would like me to do an obituary lookup, please e-mail directly for more information. 1. Wacasasa or Wacasassa Road location?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Dell, Standley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BZ.2ADI/642 Message Board Post: Looking for location of Wacasasa Road mentioned in early Alachua county commission records. I believe it may have been in the area of Newnansville or Hague. Was Wacasassa a place, river, creek? I believe it was on or near land belonging to the Standley and Dell families in the 1850-1900 time period. Thanks.
