Dear List: I have just received a death certificate for someone that I believe is a relative. His name is James Chisholm and he was born around 1886, he murdered on the 3rd of February 1906 near Georgetown, Florida in Putnam County. The cause of death was a shot from a. 38 caliber pistol, the death certificate says verdict was a willful murder. James was buried February 4th, 1906 without a funeral director. could anyone tell me where Georgetown is near, and is there a cemetery near there for blacks. Also if anyone has any information on those kinds of killings during those times. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Antoinette Russell Researching chisholms form Hanover and Louisa Counties Virginia, Chester,S.C. and Gainesville, Florida and vicinity.

Classification: Military Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BZ.2ADI/651 Message Board Post: Hundreds of young men who had fought in Florida during the Seminole Wars later found themselves serving at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks in Western New York. They were sent there in response to skirmishes along the Niagara Frontier just prior to the Civil War. These men belonged to the original U.S. Army Regiments. Their individual data was recorded and well maintained by Recruitment Adjutants at various forts throughout the east coast from Florida to Maine. The “Descriptive & Historical Register of Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army” provides valuable genealogical information for researchers, and historians, worldwide. It is from these records that I have extracted and compiled an extensive database about the soldiers who were at the Buffalo Barracks between 1835-1846. You will be pleased to know that you can search this database on-line, free of charge, by visiting: The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site http://www.buffalonet.org/army You can potentially learn some, or all, of the following information about an ancestor: Name, Age, Height, Hair Color, Eye Color, Complexion Type, Birthplace, Prior Civilian Occupation, Unit Assignment, Rank, Desertions, Apprehensions, Reenlistments, Cause of Discharge, Cause of Death and more. If you discover that you have an ancestor who was at the Buffalo Barracks, I would like to hear from you. Enjoy your search and good luck. Please tell a friend about this freebie. WT and George were the sons of Thomas R. Shuford who was born in Catawba NC and Migrated to Fl around 1850. On the Winecoff connection you are right about Williams marriage to 2 Winecoffs and according to the Winecoff geneology report they were sisters. My Grandfather Joseph was born in Miconopy in 1873 and later moved to Tampa Fl, where he married Elizabeth Durst. William is also buried in Miconopy Cemetary away from the McCredie lot. The Shufords in Miconopy had a Citrus shipping Co., which must have gone out of business after the freeze of 1893.

Do you think there's a possibility that the Mary J. Downing (b. 1837) on the list of children is actually your Mary Elizabeth with a discrepancy in her middle initial? Also, is there a chance that she had two husbands, Elisha H. Clarke and Ira Belton Huggins? You might have info which disqualifies this possibility but, it's just a thought. Hope it works out well for you and the others. If I can be of more assistance, please let me know. ~J. Downing~

Downing -- Your are a true gem! I appreciate so much all the effort you have gone to. This is so exciting because I'm now more certain this is the family several of us are seeking. Lydia, child of William H. and Eliza married Martin Huggins and I'm sure she is now located. However, Mary Elizabeth (Eliza) Downing who married Ira Belton Huggins (Martin's brother) is not on this list of children. I strongly suspect that she may prove to be the child of first son, Francis. Ira Belton and Mary Eliza named their first child Ira Francis. Once again - Many Thanks. Sara Huggins Preston
