I hope this is helpful to your group. Thank you so much, again, for giving me the opportunity to come over and speak to your group. If we can help in any way, just give us a call. Does the Ancestry test look at the maternal or paternal side? Or both? Both/neither. Really, an Ancestral Origins tests compares one person's DNA to worldwide ancestral DNA databases (as opposed to current population DNA databases). So it's different than a relationship test in that it's not really looking at the maternal or paternal specifically, but these are the sources of an offspring's DNA so it's part of the analysis. Most likely they are wondering about male and female linage DNA tests which are common in ancestral and genealogical research. These types of tests are called Y-STR and X-SV for males and females, respectively. They track genetic markers that are passed on through male and female lines which is both their usefulness and inherit limitation. For example, one of my grandfathers only had daughters, so the lineage of his Y-STR marker ended with him. I believe this is the type of reporting Ancestry.com uses. We do offer both of these test types. In a nutshell, Ancestral Origins tells a person where he or she came from geographically. The male/female lineage tests are more for determining family lines. So say, for example, I had a Y-STR profile generated for myself. I could upload this to Ancestry.com and they would add it to their database. Then say my cousin, a male on my father's side also uploads his Y-STR profile to ancestry.com. I don't know how their system works exactly, but I assume they would identify us as being related. It can't tell you how you're related though. 2. How many markers are included with the match? supposedly.... 37 is a good match This varies from person to person. However, on our example results there are hundreds of markers. I believe in statistics a population (number of markers, in this instance) of 40 is considered statistically significant. Any other information that would be relevant to this group and trying to match up their ancestry would be helpful. Without talking to the group it's hard for me to determine exactly what they are trying to uncover, but I may be able to provide more information if I knew more. If it's a group that already knows they are related either from genealogical research or what have you, then all of their Ancestral Origins results will likely be very similar. Perhaps it would be helpful to do an Ancestral Origins test on the eldest family member and have the rest do Y-STR or X-SV tests. I will say that the Y-STR/X-SV tests would only be useful if they have somewhere to send the results like Ancestry.com Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
