Board Members, Another query that I can find nothing on---anyone got any ideas? I've checked Godwin Cem with no luck Evan Feel free to write to Dana if you know something. I believe she needs the Death Records to ascertain their burial place. Evan ----- Original Message ----- From: dana To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2007 7:40 PM Subject: Godwin Cemetery I am looking for information on William Toney and his wife Mary Ann Green Toney. I have no proof that he is buried there. I have very little information on him. Just a possible birth of June 1857 in Georgia. She was born Jan 1853 and died Oct 12, 1932. They had 4 children Clara Lee, James Green , Viola, and Mary Ann. They are all buried there as well. I have been searching for over 20 years and have not found anything on him. Could you possibly help in finding where he is buried. In the 1930 census, Mary Ann Toney (widow) and daughter Viola are living together on a farm in the Bratt area. Son James G. Toney lives with his wife Mamie and 4 step kids on a farm nearby. There is a Godwin family with nine family members listed on the same census page between the two Toney households. Viola is the only Toney listed as buried in the "Godwin Cemetery" near Bratt that is transcribed by WFGS in one of their early cemetery publications. Viola's sisters Clara and Mary could be there under married names I guess. Dana could buy William Toney's widow Mary's death certificate to confirm her burial place if she doesn't have it for sure already. She has the exact death date and knows it was in Escambia County it appears. In the 1920 census, Mary A. Toney (widow) and daughters Viola and Mary are living on a farm in the Bratt area. In the 1910 census, Mary (widow) Toney is living on a farm in the Bratt area with son James G. and daughters Viola and Mary. Widow Mary shows there as having had five children and five are still living... In the 1900 census, William B. Toney is still living as the head of the family and they are residing in the Brushy Creek area of Conecuh County, Alabama. He is shown there with wife Mary A., and son James G. and daughters Viola and Mary. That census shows the couple as having been married about 1877 and that Mary has had six children born and only four are living at the time of the census. James died between the 1900 and 1910 census, so he might be buried in either Conecuh County, AL area or Bratt area of Escambia Co., FL? There also may be infants or young Toney's buried in the Conecuh area or their previous home areas based on the entries of 6 born and only 4 living as of the census taking in 1900? In the 1880 census, when they would have been married just three years or so, they are living on a farm in Beat 2 of Elmore County, Alabama [next county north from where Montgomery is]. Shown again as William B. Toney and wife Mary A., they have young daughter Clara who was born in August 1879 living with them. This also could be an area where the two Toney children born to Mary but not alive in 1900 might be buried. In the 1870 census, there is a likely candidate (I can't be sure of course) for our William in the 13 year old son of farmer John Toney and wife (Ravon?) in Township 6, Range W [listed as the Moulton Post Office area] in Lawrence County, Alabama [further north and a little bit west from the 1880 location in Elmore County] who also has a brother Sanford age 15 and a brother Allen age 9. This one seemed the most likely by the age and that both of the parents were born in GA as shown on the 1880 and 1900 census sheets for William B. Toney's parents' birth places. It was the only William at about that age that I could find with both parents from GA. I couldn't find a 3 yr old William Toney in the 1860 census that was a good candidate for our WBT, and couldn't find any Toney's in the Moulton area on any of the 105 pages of the 1860 census for that county. Unless Dana knows for sure that William B. Toney DID come to Florida to live before he died, then I would suggest she inquire at the Evergreen-Conecuh Public Library (ask for Sherry Johnston) to see if they have any Toneys listed in their surname files or in their several good county cemetery books. The above may all be info that Dana already has, but just in case, I thought I'd send it on. Time for bed...WFGS meeting in the AM. Bruce [and list], By the way, Bruce, you asked him some very pointed and important questions this morning, and got some great answers from him---hope he doesn't change his mind. There are plenty of witnesses!! ;=) A room for 60-65 persons, kitchen facilities, and we won't have to pay for the room! Boy, I can hardly wait! Also, thanks for the LOTS of work you did for the Dana lady, which I have forwarded to her, in case you didn't. I think the ball is in her court now. Her email address is: < [email protected] > She is the lady whose email I forwarded to THIS list, about William TONEY and the Godwin cemetery-- If SHE hasn't done all that work [and you never know, of course], you have done it all for her!! Wow. I didn't know you had it in you. ;=) What a RAOGK!! Also, thanks for picking up with the Ron Parks chores. Evan R. Strohl ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce &
