I got a call from Helen Allen, one of the people who helped clear and survey the Old Muscogee Cemetery several years ago. She related to me that the N. W. Florida Water Management Dist has bought a lot of land along the Perdido River and the cemetery is part of that purchase. This is good news. They have already repaired the road to the cemetery that was washed out by Ivan and left that way by the county. They have also cleared the cemetery, built a road down to the Old Black Cemetery and will clear that this weekend. They intend to put up a fence and a gate and enforce the rules about trespassing there after dark. In a related item, there will be an Honor Guard Service at the cemetery this Saturday to place flags on the grave of veterans. If you have any ancestors there who are vets, you can call Delton Boswell at cell 554-2883 to find the time of the ceremony and to let him know of any vets that you are aware of. Perhaps late this fall when it gets cool again, we can get a group together to go back to the cemetery and lay out our survey grid again and complete the survey we started before Ivan interrupted us. We have mapped one quarter of the cemetery already and with enough people could complete the survey in one or two days. We don't want to be working up there now. The crew clearing the area killed a 5 foot rattlesnake last week. Where there is one, there are bound to be others. Jerry Merritt.
