Daniel- I have had a few people in other states give me a Random Act Of Genealogical Kindness in my long distance research efforts, so I would like to offer you one. If you would like me to do so, I will try to assist you over the next several days to make some further progress based on what you have discovered thus far. Please email me directly at [email protected] and give me what details you do have. Once I get the details that you already have, I will use our local library resources to see if I can expand on them, and keep you informed on what I find. If we can determine the date of death in 1926, I will try to find his death notice or obituary in the microfilms of local papers from 1926. Then, if we can feel pretty sure that the Charles H. Schlater we have on the Florida Death Index is your grandfather, I would recommend the next step be to purchase the death certificate from the Escambia County Health Dept. It costs $8 for you to get that document. If you wish me to do so, I will call them and see if I can get the death certificate on your behalf since I am going to assist you in genealogical research locally [usually they sell to the immediate family members or an attorney representing them, but I think they make some exceptions such as we would be requesting]. If we can't determine the exact month and day of death, I also can ask if they can use just the volume no. 287 and certificate number 4543 from the state index instead of having the month and day that their request form requires in order to avoid the "search fee". If we do order the death certificate, I will need your assistance in filling out the applicant info portion of the form they require. You can view the form at http://www.escambiahealth.com/vital_stats/pdfs/application_for_florida_death _record.pdf I can pay the Health Dept for the certificate and you can reimburse me for the cost of it and other document copying costs [and a little for gas] after we get as far as we can get on this. We are in the middle of preparations for old carpet removal and installing of some new hardwood floor and new carpet due to begin next Monday, so I will have to work around those events. Lots of packing things up involved in the preps...
