I have a question hopefully someone can answer. My Dad was in the Marine Corps and our family, me included, was in Shanghai, China when the 1940 census was taken. Were we included somewhere? Does anyone know how those circumstances were treated? Was the census only for those in the U.S. at that time? Just curious... I could wait until the 1940 census is out, but I like instant gratification. For Sue Warner--and anyone else anxious to get started on preps for April 2012... I think the information I found at this census.gov web page will help clarify what the enumerators were instructed to do about those military personnel stationed outside the United States: http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/overseas/techn62-3.pdf I think you will have to check your last address before going overseas, and whatever place your Dad may have designated as the family's permanent home residence. Good Luck in your search. Here is another link to an excellent site that gives the actual questions that were asked in the 1940 census and much more: http://www.1940census.net/1940_census_questions.php Hope this helps.
