    1. [FL-WFGS] Request for photos of graves in Clopton, Big Pine Barren and Godwin Cemeteries
    2. Jerry Merritt
    3. Here is a request from a former Pensacola native who took up genealogy a few years back and has helped a lot of people along the way. He lives in northern GA now and doesn't get down here very often. If any of you have any pictures of these graves in your files and would like to share them with Mike, you can e-mail them to him at mborja@optilink.us and he will see that they get posted to Find-a-Grave. Jerry Merritt *********************************************** Good morning, Thanks for the info on archiving the Pensacola News Journal and for offering to post my request for grave photographs. My ancestry work took a new twist, when I started uploading photos of graves to my file. You'll probably remember writing me about uploading. Anyway, to date, I've probably uploaded 100-200 photos . Mainly for find a grave, but for my own file also . I've slowed my uploading somewhat, since gas prices have gotten so high, but I still do what I can. Below are the three cemeteries and persons I would like help, by receiving photos of their tombstones. I need them as a jpeg file, which usually isn't a problem, but I have received them in other formats, which won't be accepted by my Ancestry file. Thanks in advance for all your efforts on my behalf. 3. How much translation do you need? For a small amount you might be able to use an online translator: http://translate.google.com On 4/22/2011 1:31 PM, Cynthia Dean wrote: > Does anyone know what the charges might be to translate German to > English? 2. While not a native Pensacolian (Is there a better designatiion?) It's a great pleasure to see these local rememberences reach digital form. I'm going to check my home town (Saratoga Springs, NY) to see if something similar exists there. Thanks to whoever set this list up. He sold New Papers on the cornor of Government and Palafox Street. Since Billy is in his eighties now, I'm assuming this would have been sometime in the 1930's. Billy joined the Boy Scouts but he didn't have enough money to pay for the uniform. The whole uniform cost around five dollars back then. Billy went to one of the local Businee Men and asked if he'd loan him the money to buy the uniform that only J.C. Penneys sold. (I wish that I could remember the name of the Business Man.) He loaned Billy the money to buy the uniform and he told Billy, " I'm loaning you this money but I want your word that you will come into my office every Saturday Morning and lay a dime on my desk, until the loan is paid off." Billy told about that being his first encounter of giving his word as a contract to pay a debt. He would smile when he told the story and say, " You know, I never missed a Saturday of going into his office and laying that dime on his desk". " It made me real proud to do that". I'm wondering if Buddy could have been the Scout Master or is he Billys age? Billy has Dementia and is in a nursing home. He knew more stories about Hawkshaw than AC did ( if that's possible ) Those two men could keep you entertained for hours with thier stories about Hawkshaw . Pensacola lost two historians . What a shame that none of those stories were ever written down. Thanks for sharing about Buddy Blake and Grace. AC and Billy's sister Helen married into my Kimmons family.. 2. Another interesting side bit of information about the Lockwoods: Their sister Grace ended up marrying Buddy Blake, scoutmaster of one of the Boy Scout troops that met in the downtown area. In fact Buddy and Grace married at 7:00 one evening and because he had promised to take the troop camping, they loaded those young teenage boys and took them over to the Boy Scout camp. 3. I did an interview with AC Cutts for the FootPrints and AC told of George Lockwood being the first casuality of WW 11 . George was from Hawkshaw. AC's brother Billy Boxed with the Lockwood Brothers, along with other Pensacla Youth. My uncle being one of the Boxers as well. Boxing matches were held over at the Casino on the beach. AC knew the Lockwoods personally. AC Cutts can tell you if the family is still around Pensacola. I think that they are. 2. Everyone-thank you for your prompt answers. I was thinking it was George Lockwood, but I wasn't sure. What prompted my query is an article in the upcoming Pensacola Historical Society magazine. Information from an oral history states that "a boxer named Bulter and the Lockwood brothers, one of whom was Pensacola's first casualty of World War II." On line, I had found copies of the Army and Navy casualties of the war and George Lockwood was listed. I did not find a Butler from Pensacola who was listed as killed in the war. I need to clarify this statement before the article is finished. I want to thank everyone who came to my rescue. The Pensacola's genealogists are the greatest! 3. I was actually thinking along the same lines as Harold when I posted my answer. The term 'casualty' often refers to wounded and there are quite a few navy pilot training deaths in the period 1941-1942 (and later) in this area. Wouldn't these be considered casualties of war also?
