Guys, I did the same thing with Montgomery. I kept coming across records referring to Montgomery, and knew for a fact that "my" ancestors never lived in Montgomery. After wasting loads of valuable time, I finally looked at an 1820 map and discovered "Fort Montgomery," exactly three miles from Fort Mims, where my ancestors assisted in burying the dead after the Battle of Fort Mims. There were YEARS that I thought the only Montgomery in Alabama HAD to be the Capital of Alabama. I wonder how many folks out there know about Fort Montgomery, Baldwin County, Alabama. Even if you knew that, it gets even more confusing when you realize that depending on the year, Fort Montgomery was Monroe County, Mississippi Territory, Alabama Territory; Conecuh County, and then Baldwin County! Now we know why most genealogists have white hair! I noticed when I searched the white pages online, it kept asking if I wanted to look at listings for Pensacola, FL or Pensacola, OK! I had a similar situation here, I was cataloging a batch of letters written by a student at "West Point"...to his parents or mother in Pensacola. I worked hard on that collection, got all the subject headings in the catalog to West Point, New York, West Point Academy, etc. Then on one of my early trips to Atlanta, I see a sign for West Point, Georgia...so I do some checking and there is a boy's military school there, and I now became convinced these are letters from there and NOT from THE West Point. So even us archivists make mistakes! They were born in Madison, Wisconsin [WI], but soon after his birth, his family had moved to Oregon, he heard. I had spent TOO much time looking for Oregon records, as I was helping him search for his family, by using Oregon in my searches. Then, when someone in their family mentioned something concerning Portland, I was SURE that I would be on the right track in Oregon!!!!!!!! I spent too much time was spent on that wild good chase!!! Within a few weeks, my friend called to tell me that he WAS on the right track now, and that the State of Wisconsin was mailing him papers to sign his permission to open the adoption records, and that his mother ALSO, was sent papers to sign permission!! During that visit, I became aware that there was a town called Alabama nearby that was named after the state of Alabama. It is in the northwest corner of Genesee County, maybe 10-12 miles northwest from Batavia which is the county seat for Genesee County. People that talk about being from Genesee County, NY very often say they are from the Genesee Valley area. So, I guess the question may need to be, where is there an Alabama in Genesee County...??? Civil War history might need a rewrite Posted: 30 Aug 2011 05:00 AM PDT We know as genealogists, the more research you do, the more you learn. Sometimes what we learn refutes what we thought we knew. This article is a case in point. As we celebrate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, it talks about examining the records of those soldiers from NC who died while serving in the Civil War – the results were not what the researcher expected to find. “For more than a century, North Carolina clung to a pair of Civil War distinctions thought sacred: It sent the first Confederate killed in battle, and it sacrificed 40,275 men - the most in the South. Only part of that may still be true. On the 150th anniversary of the war's first shots, a new state study pulls together the scattered, error-riddled records of North Carolina's Civil War dead and shows the following: · A Virginia captain beat Pvt. Henry Lawson Wyatt, a 19-year-old from Tarboro, to the grave by nine days; · North Carolina's casualty list is actually closer to 32,000, possibly 35,000 if you count those still missing from the records and lumped into the "probable" category. Whether that's the highest is unclear; · The war killed about a quarter of the state's men of military age. More died of typhoid fever and chronic diarrhea than bullets. Some even died of spider bites and lightning strikes. The point of the study isn't to debunk any points of pride, said Josh Howard, the study's author and a historian with the state Office of Archives and History. Not aware of a Genessee, there is a Genery: a populated place located in Jefferson County <http://alabama.hometownlocator.com/al/jefferson/index.cfm> at latitude 33.309 and longitude -86.904 (Panoramio Photos <http://www.panoramio.com/map/#lt=33.3087234497&ln=-86.9038772583&z=4&k=2&a=1&tab=1>). The elevation is 712 feet. Billy wrote a wonderful article about the Veterans Wall of Honor for The Heritage of Escambia County, Florida - Volume II. He also provided photos. See pages 193-195. Every name on the wall at the time of the book's publication is included in the article.
