Florida sadly lags extremely far behind everyone else with practically no government operations to preserve, or digitize, old records other than those that will bring in money for their viewing/copying. I was born and raised in the middle of the state and still have many relatives primarily in the upper half and panhandle and have had all kinds of problems other counties of research as well. A fascinating footnote to American history and brilliantly researched genealogy. Thanks for forwarding. -----Original Message----- From: L. L. From: Dean DeBolt Sent: Wednesday, December 14, 2011 10:19 AM To: L.L. Scott ; Archives & Archivists (A&A) List Subject: Creek Indian Interviews Online I'm happy to announce that we have converted the audiotape oral history interviews that were done as part of the Creek Indian History Project in the 1980s to digital form and placed them online for listening. This was part of a grant project in the University of West Florida History Department. This link takes you right to the inventory list of these. Click on a digital file to listen to them. You need to be patient as they load, and unfortunately the original tapes often don't say on the tape the date, topic, etc. but we have tried to note these on the inventory if possible. http://143.88.66.76/Archon/?p=collections/findingaid&id=44&q=&rootcontentid=12587#id12587 We have also turned up some transcriptions of a few of the tapes and will add these as they are converted to digital form. Please let me know if you have any questions. I wasn't able to make the December program, and wondered if it had been video taped? Kay

Hi all! I just found out that the usual notice did not appear in today's PNJ even though it was provided to PNJ last week before their required deadline. That is especially unfortunate for this meeting, because I have a very good feeling that this will be a very helpful program for some NEW approaches for us to try in our online research efforts. I hope you did see Cynthia Dean's message on 28 November that she sent out to the WFGS rootsweb mailing list. We will have a brief business meeting - including nominating committee report, elections, and 2012 budget proposals and then our speaker - Elizabeth Powell Crowe from Navarre, an author and genuine expert in online genealogy research - will share with us some of the newest things she has included in her latest book, "Genealogy Online, 9th Edition". I recently purchased her newest book from amazon.com and have just begun to read it and already in the first couple of chapters am getting some new ideas to pursue. Bring a pen to take notes - she has a handout with plenty of space to note some of her suggested sites and techniques. She mentioned that she specifically intended to discuss genealogy blogging, podcasts and social networking as research tools. Try to arrive a few minutes early if you can.since it is a new meeting site - Asbury Place at the south side of Cokesbury United Methodist Church across the street from our normal meeting room at WFGL. I will be there about 9 AM to open up for Hospitality Chairman Ron Parks to start up the WFGS coffee makers and put out the donuts, and I will put out our blue and white WFGS directional arrow signs to help you in finding the new site. There is a lot of parking - more than at the WFGL, and DEFINITELY more than we had available at Vickrey Center a couple months ago. ALSO - A SPECIAL TREAT after the program during the "announcements" segment will be a brief listing [and a period after adjournment for your preview] of 37 of the books that WFGS ordered in November as part of our library support budget for 2011. The books were just received this week from several sources, and will be delivered to the WFGL staff after the meeting tomorrow and should be on the "New to the Library" shelves at the WFGL starting Tuesday. REMEMBER>>>>>>>>>NEW MEETING SITE for the 3 December meeting>>>>>>>>>ASBURY PLACE>>>>>>>>just south of and a bit behind(west) of Cokesbury Methodist Church. The address is 5725 North 9th Avenue, Pensacola. I am hoping to see you ALL there!!! Warm regards, Bruce Rova WFGS 2011 President
