I am so sorry. I tried to send a notice for Footnotes. the new site which is building a great genealogy site but evidently AOL somehow dropped the information and only gave the AOL notice. I promise I will never try to send information to FL-WFGS again. Lonnie Jones ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Your site manager :-) I have enjoyed the history questions, they show how we can work together to locate sources. It seemed each contributor used a different source. To me this site should be for learn to research problems in History/Family History/Genealogy. I think occassionally a member gets enthused over an unrelated message and probably sends it to everyone in their address book. They should really think before hitting the send button. If we start complaining on the list, we just create too much unwanted mail. If I don't care for a topic I hit the delete key, so simple and doesn't get my blood pressure up. There are just to many big things in life to worry about, why worry about the little ones. I do enjoy when people share good research links. Keep them coming. Perhaps the site has become more 'historical' than 'genealogical' and does not represent what it was initially set up for. The two somehow always seem to merge at some point, however. It would be beneficial to know the prerequisites for submitting comments to the site so that, in the future, one would not become offended. Can we heard from the WFGS Board or site manager for some guidance? I have enjoyed those many comments from the subscribers whether it was family or history but to those who would prefer it to continue strictly genealogical in nature; I will abstain from any input in the future unless it is in reference to my many family lines and collateral links in this area. Thanks to all those who have sent in comments or queries as I like to learn of the history and very little is ever mentioned that would fall under the category of genealogy. When I moved to Wright (near Ft. Walton) in 1955, (of course I was just a child, then), we found evidence of some large cement cisterns on the 17 acre "plot" that came with the house. During the 1940's, there was a dairy farm* at that site; in fact the Silas Gibson family had settled that land in about 1916*, I believe. The dairy farm was of such importance that the government waived military duty for the owners. I had always wondered what the cisterns were for and never thought to ask anyone, but now I wonder if they were for dipping. I will go to this site and see if the place in Wright is listed. Interestingly enough, I was diagnosed for Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. One of the first questions I was asked was whether I had ever been around any chemicals. I said "No, I don't think so"! * Page 222, story of Leonard Ray Gibson, Okaloosa Heritage Book, Vol. I **Page 223, story of Silas Gibson, Okaloosa Heritage Book, Volume I Margaret Hill Harris >> >> >>------------------------------- >>To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >> >> > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
If you go to Google Maps http://maps.google.com/maps and check the area just SW of St Johns Cemetery at the end of Gadsden St just west of Pace Blvd and just north of Navy Blvd you will see an area with three baseball diamonds and a pond with two islands right next to it. There are several other ponds in the general area as well but not so close to the baseball diamond area. That fits with Bruce Rova's find of the man living on Gadsden just west of Ruby Lake. It is inappropriate to use this forum for passing along personal opinions on anything but genealogy related matters. Sometimes, all of us feel strongly about other issues, and cross the line. Let's try to keep our focus, in this forum, on genealogy. Peter Young wrote: >This was my point several weeks ago. I agree. Hi, I did a google search for butcher pen pond Pensacola and this is what I found. Cattle Dipping Vats in Florida From the 1910's through the 1950's, these vats were filled with an arsenic solution for the control and eradication of the cattle fever tick. Other pesticides such as DDT where also widely used. By State law, all cattle, horses, mules, goats, and other susceptible animals were required to be dipped every 14 days. Under certain circumstances, the arsenic and other pesticides remaining at the site may present an environmental or public health hazard. See listing by county of known cattle dip vats. Pensacola Dairy had one of those vats(pond?). Butcher pen may have been where they butchered the cattle and the pond was where they dipped the cattle. Thanks, John Rosique Cynthia Dean wrote: > Just west of the Baptist Hospital was Kupfrian's Park. It had a lake. > I'm not sure if the water that is there now was part of it. There is a small lake two blocks west of Baptist Hospital that may be Butcher Pen Pond alias Lake Ruby. There are today only two lakes in West Pensacola maps. The other is just east of I-110 near W. Lakeview. Neither are named on the maps I have. Jerry [email protected] wrote: > It is in Vital Records of Pensacola, Fla., Volume 3, on page xi. A little more info. Someone in NY had sent me the URL for pages of the Pensacola Journal in the early 1900's. I was searching the name "Borras," and found this entry for May 14, 1905. "Landrum and West End teams to play. The Landrum and West End teams will play a game of baseball this morning on the diamond near Butcher Pen pond. The Landrums had arranged a game with the East Hill team, but this had been called off, and the West Ends will play. The following will compose the line-up of the Landrums and each member is requested to be present in Seville square at 8:30 o'clock: Borras, catcher; Miller, pitcher; Griffin, first base; Bergen, second base; Bonifay, short stop; Klumker, third base; Bogart, left field; Pine, center field; Mertins, right field." Thus, I was curious as to the location of Butcher Pen Pond. Since there was no bridge across the bay at that time, it seems unlikely to me that they would have gone to the Gulf Breeze area or where some of you have said Butcher Pen Cove might be. There is another article on April 18, 1905 about the same "teams played an interesting game Sunday afternoon on the diamond at Big Ditch...." So, now, where was Big Ditch???? Cynthia
In one of the three WFGS blue vital records volumes there is a list of old communities or locations found in birth and death records. I don't have the books in my personal library, but someone on the list may and could check. Perhaps Butcher Pen Pond is on the list. Judy Jolly p.s. PPL Genealogy Department now has 10 volunteers from our WFGS. What a great service they provide. They shelve books, clip papers, file, copy, and patiently and skillfully help patrons of all research levels. These volunteers represent our society and our library well. What a great group! Thanks to everyone!
I do wish people on this list would stick to genealogy and local history and not pass on stuff like this! How would everyone like it if those of us whose political and social views differ from yours chose to respond in this forum? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------ 3,761 AMERICANS HAVE DIED and at least 27,767 WOUNDED in the Iraq war; more than 71,495 Iraqi civilians have died and more than 4 million displaced. The cost: $9 BILLION a month.
