I got this from another Roots list. I didn't even know about RootsTelevision.com Cynthia ------------------------------------ Honoring Our Ancestors Newsletter SPECIAL EDITION May 30, 2008 Greetings Fellow Family History Sleuths, Please help spread the word about our latest show at RootsTelevision.com. It's about a serious epidemic that most folks are clueless about -- and it just so happens that genealogists are in a good position to help. In addition to an episode about a couple of actual cases I worked on, you'll also find a bonus video showing the research I did to solve one of the cases. Please read the following, watch Unclaimed Persons, and tell others! Thanks! Megan Coroners and Genealogists Join Forces in New Show to Tackle Quiet Epidemic of Unclaimed Persons PROVO, UT, May 28, 2008 -- What happens to people when they die with no next of kin to claim their bodies? RootsTelevision.com, an online channel dedicated to all aspects of genealogy and family history, has launched a new show, Unclaimed Persons, to bring attention to this largely unknown epidemic. Coroners’ offices across the country are struggling to cope with thousands of unclaimed people whose identities are known, but for whom no family can be found. "I knew about John and Jane Does," said genealogist Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak, "but I had no idea about all these unclaimed people who are usually cremated and buried in unmarked graves, and that's often after several months on a shelf in a morgue. We hear about abandoned pets, but you never hear about these abandoned bodies." Accidentally stumbling across an article about one such case is what prompted Smolenyak Smolenyak to cold call a couple of coroners’ offices and offer her sleuthing skills for tracking down family members. Unclaimed Persons features cases -- one involving a man who was found in his jeep in the desert and had been lost to his family for more than 50 years -- from Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania and San Bernardino County, California. Says RootsTelevision.com co-founder Marcy Brown, "We hope this show will create awareness, and that viewers will help with unsolved cases. But most of all, we hope it will motivate folks to pick up the phone and call that brother they haven’t spoken with in decades. I think it will make people ask themselves if maybe it’s time to call home. " Unclaimed Persons can be viewed at http://www.RootsTelevision.com and more information is available at http://www.rootstelevision.com/unclaimed_persons.php About RootsTelevision.com RootsTelevision.com was launched online in late 2006 and already provides more than 1,000 videos – free, on-demand and 24/7 -- for family history enthusiasts around the globe. In its first year, this Internet-based channel won four Telly Awards for its diverse programming. Bonnie, you might look at my post on the Escambia County FL site on www.Genforum.com -- note #200 -- which lists a number of residents of Century in 1943. A link from the WFGS site might be good, if you can do that. I'm not sure if I still have this file in an electronic version; if I do I could send it to you -- but I doubt that I have it. Thought you all might enjoy knowing the Escambia County FLGenWeb had 519 "hits" in May 2008. Amazing! Please think about adding new files to our county web site. It is doing a lot of people a lot of good. Thanks to all who have been participating and who will continue to participate! Sharon, That happened the first time I tried it, too, but I went back and typed just Ancestry.com into my browser. At that home page is a place on the right that says What's News - U.S. Military Collection. Free till May 31. If I click there it goes through. Cynthia
I just tried and it stated that it was no longer available. --- [email protected] wrote: > For those of you who do not get the Pensacola News > Journal or did not see the article, The National > Archives and Ancestry.com are working together to > transfer war records to the Web. For those of you who do not get the Pensacola News Journal or did not see the article, The National Archives and Ancestry.com are working together to transfer war records to the Web. You can access these records free through May 31 at the following address www.ancestry.com/military
Thanks, Cynthia, That is a good web site. I am already enjoying it and passing it on. Rebecca _____________________________________________________________ Learn how to save time and money. I put it in the Supplies drawer with your name on it---for you!! So you can get it on Wednesday!! You're Welcome! May 19, 2008 I want to bring you up-to-date about a few things: If you read today's paper, you'll see IN PRINT that the old Tryon Library will be a genealogy library-- and, of course, we knew that was going to happen but seeing progress being made on the new one makes it become more of a reality! Having said that, I want to remind you of your commitment to Mr. Fischer of PPL and WFGS that as a Society, we would be willing to help make the genealogy library set up and functioning. This probably will mean a lot of volunteers to help much as the few volunteers are doing now. We are having a meeting of volunteers, May 30, 10:30 a.m. in the genealogy dept. at PPL to make plans for ways we can help right now. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS!! If you can devote a half day a week, every other week, or one day a month, you need to be at this meeting. If you have questions regarding volunteering please call me at 982-8247 or 780-3362. Now is the time to go through all your genealogy books, etc. to see what you might consider donating to the library. The present area is becoming overloaded right now but a list of your donations can be kept so the library(or someone else) won't purchase the same thing--give it some thought. Other news: JANET MYERS has filled the position on the Board to replace Dorothy Jacobs. Don't forget that there will be a "Help" desk every meeting beginning at 9:00 a.m. for those who might have a special problem that others can help solve. This will be at the back table and several people will be able to help others. The Board has agreed to let people from other genealogy societies bring the published works of that Society for sale at our meetings. They will "man" their own sales tables and any funds collected will not go through our Society. GOOD NEWS! Speakers for the October conference have been contacted and agreed to come. More about this later! Don't forget to read your newsletter. Hope to see MANY of you at our next meeting, June 6. Priscilla Nobles, President

http://www.stevemorse.org/ This has all kinds of interesting stuff. Most of it is free, except some that hooks up to Ancestry. But, it has a section that explains what all those codes are on the 1930 census under A, B, C and D. Scroll down to 1930 Census Codes under US Census and Soundex. They have to do with Occupation, Language, state & country of birth, Indian tribes. Maybe Lee has sent this before. If so, I failed to check it out. Cynthia

Super! Connie and I would like to participate in the work on that cemetery. Bruce Rova -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Jerry Merritt Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 2:57 PM To: Escambia, FL List; WFGS Subject: [FL-WFGS] The Old Muscogee Cemetery I got a call from Helen Allen, one of the people who helped clear and survey the Old Muscogee Cemetery several years ago. She related to me that the N. W. Florida Water Management Dist has bought a lot of land along the Perdido River and the cemetery is part of that purchase. This is good news. They have already repaired the road to the cemetery that was washed out by Ivan and left that way by the county. They have also cleared the cemetery, built a road down to the Old Black Cemetery and will clear that this weekend. They intend to put up a fence and a gate and enforce the rules about trespassing there after dark. In a related item, there will be an Honor Guard Service at the cemetery this Saturday to place flags on the grave of veterans. If you have any ancestors there who are vets, you can call Delton Boswell at cell 554-2883 to find the time of the ceremony and to let him know of any vets that you are aware of. Perhaps late this fall when it gets cool again, we can get a group together to go back to the cemetery and lay out our survey grid again and complete the survey we started before Ivan interrupted us. We have mapped one quarter of the cemetery already and with enough people could complete the survey in one or two days. We don't want to be working up there now. The crew clearing the area killed a 5 foot rattlesnake last week. Where there is one, there are bound to be others. Sounds great, Jerry, wonder if we will be able to find and identify some of the black graves---did she say? Would be excited for a tour when it's ready--contact me--- sans the rattlesnakes! ;=) Evan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron" <[email protected]>
