    1. [FL-WFGS] Encouraging Indexing
    2. L.L. Scott
    3. You may already be aware that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has started a massive volunteer project to index millions of family history records. The indexed records are free to everyone. Volunteers have already indexed millions of names (which are already searchable here: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0). > > The project is off to a great start--but as you can imagine, the amount > still left to do is staggering. And that's where we can help. If you have > an internet connection and just 30 minutes a week, you can index > names--you can do it any time of the day or night. You don't have to get > dressed up--you can index in your pajamas if you want :) > > Here is the indexing site where you can learn more and sign up if you want > to: www.familysearchindexing.com.

    1. [FL-WFGS] New Items on Escambia County, FLGenWeb; 2008 Footprints
    2. Bonnie Griffis Lewis
    3. Thanks to Carolyn and Curtis Reedy, the index of 2006 obituaries from the Pensacola News Journal is now online at the Escambia County FLGenWeb at: www.flgenhistonline.com/counties/escambia/escindex.htm Scroll down the site index to Vitals: obits, etc. Also there is a new file on Out of County deaths. Please contribute when you learn of a death that relates to Pensacola or Escambia County in some way (i.e., person was born in Pensacola, family lives in Pensacola, burial is in Pensacola, etc.). I have asked FreeFind to re-index the entire web site, so that the names in these new files would be picked up by the FreeFind search function on the main page. It should be done any day now, but as of tonight, has not been done. New Subject: WFGS is looking for articles for the WFGS 2008 Footprints. Preferred deadline for submission is about September 2008. Electronic format is preferred but not absolutely necessary. Pass the word that neatly written articles will be gratefully accepted. Send electronic submissions or questions to Bonnie Griffis Lewis, [email protected] My address is in the current roster, although the phone number is incorrect! Thanks very much.

    3. I remember Sid very well. I helped him catalog many records at the old health department up on Palafox St. One day it was raining so hard that we both got soaked . I decided to go home but Sid got some paper towels and dried off as much as he could and kept on recording the death notices. He was dedicated. I did not know Mrs . 3. My church, but I didn't go, since I didn't know her. It was a nice gesture to have memorial contributions to the Genealogy section of the Library. Guess she knew (and the family) how much Sid loved that library! I got to know Sid only briefly, when I first joined the Society. He set a standard of volunteerism that will surely be hard to surpass. My sympathy to those who knew him. 1. [FL-WFGS] The Baby
    2. L.L. Scott
    3. The University of Manchester Celebrates the Birth of the Modern Computer The Small-Scale Experimental Machine, known as SSEM, or the "Baby", was designed and built at The University of Manchester, and made its first successful run of a program on June 21st 1948. It was the first machine that had all the components now classically regarded as characteristic of the basic computer. Most importantly it was the first computer that could store not only data but any (short!) user program in electronic memory and process it at electronic speed. >From this Small-Scale Experimental Machine a full-sized machine was designed and built, the Manchester Mark 1, which by April 1949 was generally available for computation in scientific research in the University. With the integration of a high speed magnetic drum by the Autumn (the ancestor of today's disc) this was the first machine with a fast electronic and magnetic two-level store. It in turn was the basis of the first commercially available computer, the Ferranti Mark 1, the first machine off the production line being delivered in February 1951. These pages tell the story of the Baby and the Mark 1, and give a record of the 50th anniversary celebrations for the Mark 1, and the machines that followed it. The highlight of the 1998 Celebrations was the construction of a working replica of the Baby now on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester (see Galleries > 1830 Warehouse > Baby Computer). http://www.computer50.org/

    3. Trying to get some of my membership stuff in order. I've added some things to our new member packet that I thought would be helpful. I found a note from Joann Dinsmore with an e mail address not sure if you have it or not so here it is [email protected] What number did you give to Tara Parks? As for Robert Sanders we scanned his pedigree chart and sent it back to us and it was very hard to read. We got a new scanner so not sure if it's the scanner or the operator. His pedigree chart went out to you in today's mail, that was a lot easier than trying to figure this monster out. In that gray file box of ours, I cleaned it out and organized everything, that's where I found the new stuff for the new member packet, also, I found the Membership Certificates, I had forgotten about them and at last meeting Wanda Keen asked for one. They have our old logo on them but I made her up one anyway since it seemed important to her. Should we get some new ones made with the new logo on them or use up these old ones first. Since I've been doing this I can't remember putting them in the packet so I'm sure some members do not have one. Do you think I will ever get this all together?? If I can't maybe we will have to pass it on to someone who can do a better job than I. Yolanda ----- Original Message ----- From: "L.L.
