Simple question: Is anyone currently doing obits, daily---for publication via the WFGS? Evan
I didn't know there was a woman's club there, but I was really interested in anything about the "early" history of that particular area. Either its history as a dueling location, or other uses. Thanks, Terry. I have made a folder for Frascati now, and put it in the COMMUNITIES file drawer with all the other communities. Anyone can add info, articles, stories, history, etc to these file folders-- see a Volunteer if you have questions. ----- Original Message ----- From: "TERRY SCHWARTZ" <tdschwartz@msn.com> To: <fl-wfgs@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 07, 2011 11:24 AM Subject: Re: [FL-WFGS] Frascati > > Evan, > Do you want info on the woman's club ? Evan, Do you want info on the woman's club ? I can help with that if you wish , it was incorporated in 1920 and it is East Heinburg behind Hall's front faces Gregory. Thanks, Cynthia, somewhere---we have an article on that place, I just can't find it. I had heard it was located at the far EAST end of HEINBERG, basically behind Halls's Seafood, and, that it WAS a place for dueling, also. I would just like to have some info to put in the file folder on Frascati, especially since it was thought there were DUELS back there! An interesting part of our history. Anyway, we DO have a file folder on that place under "Communities." The whole COMMUNITIES drawer is really filling up now---I'll be only a few of us realized there were so many listtle communities through the years, in this area---Hawkshaw, Flatiron, Mosquiteo Flats, Gandyville, Tinville, Tatertown, etc. You should ALL take a look in that drawer the next time you are in the WFGL. Time for a plug. If ANY of you know of names of OTHER local communites through the years, and know something ABOUT them, please forward the info to a WFGL Volunteer, or bring them IN. Thanks. Bonnie!!! Keep on plugging, dear!! ;=) You DO have a point. Some of those communities in that drawer might deserve an "airing out" in a future Footprints--- that would be fun! It's a GREAT resource. Quentin Black is another old timer who used to go to the Seville Square Reunions. Thanks for the feedback, Carolyn. Your heads-up that the 2010 PowerPoint didn't load on your computer gave me a chance to put an earlier version out on the Internet link before the majority of the attendees went there. I double checked my PPT and it is 2007 but I still can't open that version of your presentation. HOWEVER, the other version opens without a problem. So, thanks for the alternative. I've read so many misinformed things written about Hawkshaw and it's people, I wanted everyone to know the real people that was one big family that looked out for each other. Very few people know that the older generation's of Hawkshaw, continued to have yearly reunions in Seville Square, until a about six or seven years ago , until most of them died off or got too old to pull it together. There are some of them left , like AC Cutts that love to talk about it. Betcha any one of them could tell you about "Frascati" ----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Strohl" <estrohl@cox.net> To: <fl-wfgs@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 05, 2011 5:12 PM Subject: Re: [FL-WFGS] Footprints 2010 available > Doris, > Let me tell you what a GREAT job your did in the Footprints. > Your stories of the Benjamin KERSEY and Hawkshaw were > top notch! > I haven't seen that much about Hawkshaw anywhere, and will > be copying it for the WFGL's folder on "Communities--Hawkshaw." > > Future patrons who find it will be grateful! > > Evan > > > > > P.S. Evan, As you come down 17th Ave. toward the Pensacola Bay bridge, Frascati was on that hill to your right (west) after you go under the grafitti bridge. It was on Gregory St. as best I can remember. The old Woman's Club used to be there where I played duplicate bridge. I heard they used to have duelings at Frascati. Don't know if that is true. But, they did have picnics and social events. That same area is referred to as Aaronsville sometimes. Our church had a children's festival there in 1888 and "a festival at Frascati in 1892, and a special street car had been ordered for the children to ride to the picnic. Messrs. Zirkelbach and Riedel were to provide the games, and it was decided against making fish chowder for that year." (from God With Us 100 Years / by Ed Albrecht & Cynthia Dean - a history of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pensacola, FL, p. 66) Perhaps some old newspapers of that period would lend more info. Dean DeBolt and Jackie Wilson probably have more information. Cynthia
Doris, Let me tell you what a GREAT job your did in the Footprints. Your stories of the Benjamin KERSEY and Hawkshaw were top notch! I haven't seen that much about Hawkshaw anywhere, and will be copying it for the WFGL's folder on "Communities--Hawkshaw." Future patrons who find it will be grateful! Evan P.S. Does anyone know of the area of "Frascati" and what was noted for?? Evan Jerry Merritt, You did a GREAT job today with your mini-covention!! Now, I want private lesssons from you, myself!! I think I could be so more useful to our visitors if I learned your techniques. I'll see you on Tuesdays---or is it Wednesdays!!? Thanks, Evan By the way, I'm giving a short class on "Finding Your African-American Ancestors," on Feb 19th, Sat, at 10AM---I could use you about 11AM, when we "move" the class out to the main area of the library, and help the people learn how to use the computers. for an hour. Let me know if you help. Class size?---don't know yet! The link below will take you to a page with all of the links we discussed at the subject meeting this morning - plus many more. While this list is not by any means exhaustive, these are the sites most volunteers have used to solve genealogy problems for patrons of the West Florida Genealogy Library. In short, they will get the job done - for free - for the vast majority of genealogy problems http://robledal.org/genealogy.htm On this link is also a link to an abbreviated version of the PowerPoint presentation used in this morning's presentation. This PowerPoint link is to a 7 megabyte version of the 30 megabyte original but retains enough of the presentation for you to follow some of the specific steps we discussed. If you were unable to attend this morning's meeting, the above link is still handy though you won't get nearly as much out of the abbreviated PowerPoint link. The PowerPoint is a 2010 version so if you have a pre-2007 PowerPoint you may have to download a free PowerPoint Viewer at the following link to view the presentation. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=cb9bf144-1076-4615-9951-294eeb832823 Jerry Merritt
