FYI.....After hearing about your cemetery quest a friend gave me 2 names. We figured you probably know them and have copied them but if not I'm passing them along to you. One is Pine Forest Baptist Church on Pine Forest Rd. just North of 5 Flags Speedway (probably have done this one since it's one a main road). The other is a small one in the back corner of a small church property...Spring Hill AME Zion Church at the corner of Godwin Lane and Blue Angel. I have no ancestors in Escambia Co. so I don't have a copy of the book to check. Keep up the good work. Hope you and Jerry have a good turn out for the program this week. And to Jerry, as you read this too, it was a great program this month. Nancy
Ginny Deagan asked me to let all her friends know she has a new, temporary e-mail addy: ginny@deagan.net It's been so long since she has been on e-mail, she would love to hear from her friends!

Feb. 19, 2011 at 10:00 AM Where: West Florida Genealogy Library, 5740 North 9th Ave, Pensacola, FL Cost: None Genealogists Evan Strohl and Jerry Merritt will give a PowerPoint presentation and workshop on beginning African American genealogy for Black History Month at the West Florida Genealogy Library beginning at 10:00 AM Saturday, 19 February. The complete program will be approximately two hours and will cover how to get started, how to piece together family lineages from seemingly unrelated clues, and how to put together a road map to doing your own personal family history. It will even include tips on how to trace your paternal and maternal lines back to specific locations in Africa. It will also include examples of African American research done recently by volunteers for beginning researchers at the Genealogy Library. A tour of library facilities will follow the presentation and, for those who already have enough information to get started, volunteers will work with them in beginning to find and document their family's history. For an exact date, we check the Social Security Index to see if there is one. If the date is just a month, and we are dealing with a weekly newspaper, we WILL indeed check since it is four issues. If the paper requested is a daily....that is subjective whether we will check or not. With the Pensacola newspaper on microfilm and with its obits in a standard place, we sometimes will guickly check a month. There is considerable talk among archivists and librarians that with our ability to scan and store newspapers digitally and that some of the locals are picked up in national databases now that individual indexing is not necessary. I also suspect that as more court records and online "data miners" are available that there are other avenues for discovering death dates, even if it involves paying a small fee to a data miner group. The Reedy's have this information. You would need to direct the inquirer to Carolyn Reedy, indigo5@cox.net, who will respond to the person's inquiry. Those years which have already been indexed can either be looked up in the newspaper, or one could contact Carolyn, who if available, can provide a copy of the obit via e-mail. I'm not sure what else you would be looking for... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Strohl" <estrohl@cox.net> To: <fl-wfgs@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2011 8:18 PM Subject: Re: [FL-WFGS] Obits? > Bon, I believe I was being somewhat facetious when I > suggested a phone number---I don't even think they would > want someone calling them---at will, nor would I. > > The point I was making was that if the WFGL gets a phone > call, and we DO, for an obit back in, say, last October, and > they don't have the date, which is likely, do we have a way to > help them? > We always ask for an exact date---and the library staff asks them > the same, so the reason for my original question was to know if anyone > is doing current obits, THAT ARE INDEXED, so that 2 months, > or 8 months in the past, we can easily look up an obit, i the > recent past, for someone. > Absent this capability, we SHOULD have someone indixing the > obits---it IS one area that we are lacking. Bon, I believe I was being somewhat facetious when I suggested a phone number---I don't even think they would want someone calling them---at will, nor would I. The point I was making was that if the WFGL gets a phone call, and we DO, for an obit back in, say, last October, and they don't have the date, which is likely, do we have a way to help them? We always ask for an exact date---and the library staff asks them the same, so the reason for my original question was to know if anyone is doing current obits, THAT ARE INDEXED, so that 2 months, or 8 months in the past, we can easily look up an obit, i the recent past, for someone. Absent this capability, we SHOULD have someone indixing the obits---it IS one area that we are lacking. A couple of ladies have recently come to the library and asked for a project to keep them busy. And this obit question keeps coming to mind. And a question for Dean---does your office look up obits without knowing a date? If so, my point is moot. I now know you have all those papers, which is wonderful---are the obits indexed? Thanks for you answers. Evan And I DO appreciate what the REEDYs are doing, and have done, for us. Thank you REEDYs. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bonnie Griffis Lewis" <griffle@cox.net> To: <fl-wfgs@rootsweb.com> Cc: "Carolyn Reedy" <indigo5@cox.net> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2011 10:58 AM Subject: Re: [FL-WFGS] Obits? > Would not want to give out a phone number. The best book on War of 1812 genealogical sources is George Schweitzer's War of 1812 book (he was a speaker for WFGS some years ago). The UWF library collections have in excess of 100 books on the War of 1812, and I would suggest looking through those. Schweitzer's book is on the 4th floor, call number E 354 S34 1983. I'm sure there are copies at WFGS Library. We don't track the obits that we do. We can locate them using things like Social Security Index, sometimes Google if someone has published a family tree, cemetery indexes for the various counties, biography files that we have onsite, etc. Dean On Wed, Feb 9, 2011 at 10:59 AM, Bonnie Griffis Lewis <griffle@cox.net>wrote: > Hi Dean! Would not want to give out a phone number. I think it would be courteous to ask them if receiving phone calls would work for them. They will see this e-mail because I've cc'd them, but are not members of the List. Best to e-mail them directly and ask if they will accept phone calls. As you might imagine, finding an obit in the thousands of obits is a real Herculean task. It isn't something that can be done during the timespan of a phone call. But, let them decide and while you are at it, give them a great big thank you for all that work!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Strohl" <estrohl@cox.net> To: <fl-wfgs@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2011 9:06 AM Subject: Re: [FL-WFGS] Obits? > Thanks, Bon, so if they will respond to queries, > I guess we ought to have their phone # at the WFGL, > so they can call them, huh?? Special Collections staff will look up obituaries and send to anyone in the world without charge. I don't think a day passes that we don't look up an obit and send it to someone. We have newspaper holdings for the ten counties of the Panhandle that go back as far as we can get the papers. Many are on microfilm, but we have vast holdings of papers that are not on film and can also cross-check obits with other sources. For example, many of the small towns in the panhandle are weeklies. Sometimes the obituaries are listed in the closest "daily" paper town. Obituaries for Santa Rosa County are often in the Pensacola papers. We have paper runs of the Pensacola Journal from 1905 through the 1950s and runs of the Pensacola News from about the same period though the microfilm begins in 1889 when the News launched. Before that we use the Pensacola Gazette which runs 1821-roughly 1857; we have two different microfilm sets of the Gazette from two different universities because neither has quite the same issues as the other. I probably should give a program sometime on newspaper holdings, especially for Florida about finding them and using them. Thanks, Bon, so if they will respond to queries, I guess we ought to have their phone # at the WFGL, so they can call them, huh?? "Annually" is too long to wait for the update, cuz people call us at any time. OK, Thanks. Do you have their phone number to call? Thank you, Jerry Merritt, for a fabulous presentation last Saturday! It was wonderful. I am stumped over troop movements during the War of 1812, so I thought I would collectively ask everyone for advice. I know of several ancestors who served in the North Carolina Militia, 3rd Regiment, during the War of 1812. How can I research where the various companies may have travelled, short of paying the $85 dollars each for NARA's veteran records? I suspect it was the War of 1812 that brought my ancestors to the Tensaw Region. I know they were together in Moore's Company, 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Militia. I just can't find troop movement information. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any advice. Shirley Shirley Booth Byerly, M.A.; M.S.C.E. 21745 Hubbard Road Robertsdale, AL 36567
I visited with Ginny Deagan today as I delivered her Footprints. She is doing well [my opinion], but she still misses her independence now that she is in assisted living, which is to be expected. She is on a walker, she's misses being able to walk on her own. All of these things are to be expected as we are growing older, but it does not mean we have to like it. :-) She does have Cox internet, but they have never been able to get her email to working. She is most unhappy with this situation. She can be contacted on Facebook. She misses all the the folks at WFGS.
The Reedy's (Carolyn & Curtis) do obits, but they are submitted to me annually to put up on the website. They have done this well over 10 years! They respond to queries and provide copies of obits. They are a treasure beyond compare!!! Thank you Carolyn and Curtis!!!!
