In 2012 I posted this and want to repost as someone may be out there researching this family that wasn't at that time. The following is the post... Does anyone know this family? The 1920 census has them living in this area, (Pompano Beach, FL) just added. Their names are Dock (1876), my grandfather, Luvenia (1876), my grandmother, Willie, Fred, James and Matthew, my uncles and Cora and Josephen, my aunts, (1901-1914). My father's name was Freeman (1915). I am looking for any living relatives. They may have lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fl for some time. Records show them living in the Liberia section, which may have changed names over the years. My father and uncle Fred, may have moved to Vero Beach, FL as this is the last known address on my father's death certificate. Can anyone help me as I have been searching for quite some time. Please email me at dcmonroe@verizon.net. Thank you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Many people still don't believe that Africans hold their age better than other ethnics, but it has been known for a thousand years, Herodotus and other ancient documenters referred to Africans as " the longest lived." I believe the most significant point to emphasize is that even US slaves had a longer life span than modern day US Africans. The incremental effects of residing outside the Torrid Zone is slowly working against US Africans. In fact,if current trends continue,it may one day be written that those Africans who came to the United States as slaves did not survive the twenty-first century. Evelyn Postell Singletary was the first born of two children to the late Chester Postell and Clara Collier Postell, who was fondly known as "Sweet." Evelyn was born on Sept. 18, 1917, in Bellville, Florida. She had one brother, S.K. Postell. After the death of her mother at an early age, Evelyn moved with her father and brother to St. Petersburg, Fla. There she and her brother attended grade school. She then later moved to Newark, New Jersey, which would be 'home' for her for the next 30 years. During a part of this period in Newark, it was 'war time,' when men went to war and the ladies had to go to work. She received employment with General Electric. Evelyn made a good life for herself in Newark. She worked hard and learned how to stand up for herself. Because of the snow storms that were frequent during the winter months, she recalls spending hours talking on the phone with family and friends. She joined the Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. Additionally, she was an advocate for civil rights and would reminisce about the days when she marched alongside Malcolm X in his fight for equal rights. Evelyn always had a special love for her first home, Bellville, Florida, where her roots and family were. While at home during her father's funeral, she met Parnell Singletary and although it would be another 10 years before she would come back home to live, she did return to Bellville and married Parnell soon after in Valdosta, Ga. They bought an acre of land in Bellville and built a home. Evelyn was happy, she was home and around her family. They worked hard to keep up their home for many years until Parnell became ill. Parnell died in 1983, while on the way to the hospital. Evelyn continued to care for their home and property after Parnell's death. She became very active in the community. She was one of the first black volunteers as a Pink Lady in the hospital. She was also one of the first black supporters of the Senior Center. There she met Mrs. Connie Bryant who taught her how to crochet; this would become her favorite hobby. She crocheted many spreads, baby blankets and shawls, some of which were hung in the local senior center. She joined Lily of the Valley Missionary Baptist Church where she served until her health failed. She was always concerned about the progress of Bellville and fought to get senior transportation into the community for the seniors to go to the doctor. She also helped to get a voting house constructed in the area. There she worked tirelessly at the polls to make sure all votes were counted. One of her biggest and proudest accomplishments is the new fire station built with a grant from the state for $150,000. She proudly talked about how she sat on her porch and called Senator Mackey regarding the need for a firehouse in the area. She wouldn't stop until she got the community a fire house. She also worked with the county commissioners to get one of the highways named after Dr. Martin Luther King. She remained in her home until her health started to fail at the age of 91 when she went to live at Suwannee Valley Nursing Home, where she remained until hospitalization was necessary. Evelyn was a woman of her word, she had a great sense of humor, and she was always passionate about whatever project or issue she was involved in. She believed in both perseverance and in being honest; she was never too intimidated to speak her mind and she always left a lasting impression on whomever she met. Her favorite saying was "Age is just a number and mine is unlisted." Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 4:10 p.m. at the age of 95, Mrs. Evelyn Postell Singletary finished her last mile. She fought a good fight, she kept the faith, and she is now resting in the presence of the Lord. She leaves to cherish her memories; a devoted god daughter and godson, Maceo and Gwen Howell and family. Special cousins, Mr. Clabe Collier, Shelia Muse, (Cornelius), Margie Mitchell; one niece; and a host of loving cousins, friends, and the Lily of the Valley Church family. Homegoing celebration for Sis. Evelyn Singletary will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Lily of the Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Jennings, Fla. The Rev. Patrick Howell is the pastor and will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bethel Memorial Gardens in Bellville, Fla. Public viewing will be from noon-8 p.m., today, May 8, 2013, at Eric A. They recorded their first album in 1956, and found careers in secular music - the kind that Rosa Wright wouldn't allow in her home. Rosa Wright was a deeply devout woman who always cared for others, first as a domestic worker, then as registered nurse. But whatever else she did, she spent most of her 85 years in prayer and song. Gospel music by groups like the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Soul Stirrers and Shirley Caesar filled her homes in the James E. Scott housing projects, later in El Portal. ``Her entire life was in church until she couldn't get there anymore,'' said Betty -- Born Bessie Regina Norris -- Wright's seventh child. ``Even in her room in rehab, she had gospel on the radio. . . She'd hold onto her walker and do her little shout and step.'' After Rosa Wright died of diabetic complications on Sept. 5 at North Shore Medical Center, loved ones -- including most of her 41 grand and great-grandchildren held ``a giant celebration, full of music and life'' at Bethel Apostolic Church, Betty Wright said. ``We sang her into glory. She was going home to her Father,'' as the last of nine siblings. Born Rosa Lee Akins on Oct. 3, 1924, in Cairo, Georgia, she came to South Florida after a racial incident involving her brothers drove her extended family out of town in 1936. They were well off, and had to leave their farms and possessions to start over at the bottom in Perrine, then Overtown. She was married three times: to Milton Wright Sr., whom she divorced; to McArthur Norris then to Jimmy Braddy, who both died. After Rosa graduated from Miami's segregated George Washington Carver High School, she traveled by three buses daily to care for families in Miami Beach - where black people could only go to work, and only if they carried a police permit. ``She once had an incident on the bus like Rosa Parks, when I was a baby in her arms,'' said daughter Jeanette Wright of Miami, formerly with KC and the Sunshine Band. ``It was 1949 or '50,'' added her older brother, retired Boston Municipal Judge Milton Wright, a choir leader and playwright. ``My mother told us where to sit, on the side. The bus driver turned around and said, `Why you sittin' on the white people's chair? You got to move to the back.' He pulled the bus over and got up to move her.'' Rosa Wright would not be moved. ``She stood up with her little umbrella. We all stood up. Somebody white yelled: `Can't you see her with all them children?' We never sat in the back of the bus.'' While she worked, Rosa Wright studied nursing at what was then Miami-Dade Junior College, Betty Wright said. By the mid-1960s. Rosa was working in pediatrics at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The family's spiritual home base was the Pentecostal Firstborn Church of the Living God, demolished by Interstate 95 construction. She ushered at Bethel Apostolic, where she worked with children, Jeanette said. She was also a nurse in the Miami-Dade public schools, in pediatrics at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and at the Douglas Gardens Jewish Home. After she retired from nursing, Rosa Wright went on the road with Betty, doing whatever she could to be helpful. In her last days, she told her children to stop all treatment, because she was ready to go. In addition to Betty, Jeanette and Milton, Rosa Wright is survived by sons Phillip and Charles Wright of Miami, former calypso musicians who played with the Afro-Beats. She was predeceased by son Michael and daughter Barbara. Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/01/03/1997833/nurse-mother-filled-the-wo... The 1920 census has them living in this area. While I can only go by what I have seen. You make the call. As a 17 year old boy in Florida, I sat and talked with Charlie at least 8 times while I travelled from FT Myers, Fl to Starke, Fl and back. This was in 68/69. Charlie told me he was not sure of his age, but then showed me two papers. One was his release from the military in the Civil War, the other was a paper issued at the same time that said he was a free man. I have no proof of these documents, but I believe Charlies accounts. He told me he had been a slave and was from Africa. He loved Coke in the 6 ounce bottles and chocolate candy bars. I just knew him as a very nice man. It was 3 or 4 years later that I read about him in a World Record book. He was listed as the oldest but with no verifying documentation. I remember people giving me the "sure you did" look when I told them about it. Maybe Charlie lied. I prefer to believe Charlie! I remember the time when you took a man or! woman at their word. Years have passed and my mind is alittle grey, but I do remember his smile. It was beautiful and honest.. I saw it each time I stopped as he would hand me a soda pop (as he called them) and said "sit down here boy and we's kin talks abit"! :-) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
