    3. My great-grandmother was born Amanda Apeha on 27 Feb 1860. At some time, in some enrollment, Amanda was told she would have to take an English name. Her father, whose name was A-pe-ha, had taken the name William as a first name, so she took Williams as a last name, becoming Amanda Apeha Williams. Amanda's parents were A-pe-ha (later William Apeha) and Sukie Bohanan. I guesstimate A-pe-ha and Sukie were born about 1840, and they apparently died before enrollment. One of my cousins said Sukie Bohanan was the sister of Anthony Bohanan and Winnie Battiest. If that's true, her parents were Jessie Bohanan and probably Nancy Turnbull. Unfortunately, that cousin turns out to have been somewhat creative in her genealogy, so...I take everything she said with a grain of salt; however, when Amanda's children were left orphans, Thomas Sanguin (Choctaw by Blood census card 1397) was named their guardian, and I believe he was related to Anthony Bohanan and his sister Winnie Battiest. Amanda died before final enrollment, but her children are all enrolled on Choctaw by Blood census card 808. Amanda's sister, Sarah Stephen (Choctaw by Blood census card 520) listed Ape-ha (only one -) as her father and Sukey Apeha as her mother. That's the only official record I've found that mentions either Apeha or Sukey. I had about decided A-pe-ha was a figment of everybody's imagination up until I found him on Sarah's enrollment. I'd like to find some record of Sukie Bohanan Apeha and/or William Apeha. I'm afraid Sukie was a nickname for something else, like Sarah, which will make it hard to find her. Other researchers who are studying the line of Jessie Bohanan and Nancy Turnbull have no record of Sukie. One final wrinkle: my grandfather told me his mother, Amanda, had to choose whether to enroll as a Choctaw or a Chickasaw, because she was 1/2 each. I'm not finding any Chickasaws anywhere in the family, unless A-pe-ha was Chickasaw. Any suggestion on where to look for Sukie and A-pe-ha? Beverly missbev@theshop.net
