I am looking for info about my maternal mother's father. His name was "Big Jack". My grandmother was born in Ashdown, Arkansas, married my maternal grandfather, L.W. Roland, an African American, and lived in the Oklahoma Territory until the late 1920s when the family moved to California. My grandmother, Cornelius (Gupton) Mays, also had relatives in Louisiana. Because she could not speak English and lost contact with her family, we are having a difficult time restructuring her life since she died in 1992 in Bakersfield, California. What Native American tribes were around Ashdown, Arkansas in the 1900s? Thanks! Ed Udell
Does any one know where is is? Aug 1894 probate listing NANCY E. PUGH as a heir, states that's where she lived. Her maiden name was LANGSTON. I am trying to find her and her decendants. Sara
I hope this doesn't go through twice. I'm new to this LIST and new to Indian Genealogy. My children want to find their great-grandmother and their children are very interested in their Indian Heritage. Doralee Hendricks Wood is listed on the 1920 Census Soundex as 19 years old, born in Arkansas, wife of Walter Wood (Walter Price Wood), age 23, born Okla. This was in the county of McCurtain. He is supposedly also part Indian. They had a daughter, Ella May Wood born 1920. There is a possibility that Doralee is the daughter of Charley Hendricks, listed as Roll No. 17078. Albert Hendricks might be her brother. I have a land record showing Charley received land in Ottawa Co., Bartlesville, OK at age 24 and was "full blood". Any help or suggestions as to where to go next will be appreciated. Redell in Colorado
I'm new to this LIST and not experienced in Indian Research, so I need help and your patience. I'm looking for my kids' great-grandmother and her parents, heritage, etc. On the 1920 Census Soundex she is listed as 19 years, born in Arkansas, wife of Walter Wood, 23 years, born in Okla. census from McCurtain County, Okla. I know that they were divorced and she died in Albuquerque or Bernillo, NM in 1931-32. Those death records supposedly burned and we cannot find her grave. There's a possibility that her father was Charley Hendricks and perhaps a brother was Albert Hendricks, but no proof. Charley Hendrick has a roll number of 17078 and a land record from Ottawa Co. and is listed as "full blood Indian' . The land does not have a date on it but he is listed as 24 years old. What's best way of going about finding more? My grandchildren are very interested in their Indian heritage. Thanks, Redell in Colorado
Hi Tim, After discussion with various older members of the family, they had always heard that Ann or Amanda Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rogers was Cherokee. They had also believed she was full blood, which I don't believe. If you could find anything on her it would be great. Her father was James Meridith(Marion) Rogers b 1846 Johnson County, AR d 1896 Iron Bridge, IT and her mother was Mary Jane Malone b 1850 in Johnson County, AR d 1881 in Logan County, AR. I know nothing else about Mary Jane Malone but James Meridith's parents were Thomas Jackson Rogers b 1817 in Tennessee d 1862 Pea Ridge, AR and Anne Elizabeth (?) b 1820 in Virginia. Thomas Jackson Rogers' parents were Joseph C Rogers b 1770 in Tennessee and Sarah (?) b 1774 in Tennessee. Thanks, Cathy.
Hello, I have seen references to intermarriage in the Indian Territory, but all I've read has pertained to white men marrying Native American women. Would the high license fee (around $100) and the written support of several citizens also have been required when a Choctaw man took a white wife? Does anyone know the legal status of common-law marriages in the Indian Territory? That is, were they considered legally binding as they are in some states, despite the lack of an official license? Would the offspring of a common-law marriage have been citizens of the Nation, even if they had a white mother? I have been told that in the I.T. "children followed the blood of the mother," and that illegitimacy was never an issue. But I wonder if, this being the case, a white mother means non-citizenship for her children? Would there be any record of the children's births in the Nation? How about in Ft. Smith, if the children were considered white? I am trying to figure out where to look for any records that might list the father's name or maternal grandparents. Thanks for any help. :-)
Hello, I too am new to the list. I am searching for anyone with the surname of Yocubby who is related to Lizzie Yocubby. I also need information on anyone who is related to Governor Daniel H. Johnston. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Betty Love
I am looking for information regarding Maude Elizabeth Wolf(e) who married Garland Henry Johnson around 1870. She later remarried a Reeves. The family lived in Arkansas and in Taliqua Ok. They had a son named Robert Johnson who married Almeda Jane Carroll and they had a daughter named Addie Johnson. ( born 1894) We have lots of smoke for Indian blood but no fire. The tradition is active in three families that descend from Maude Elizabeth Wolfe ( I think she went by Elizabeth). None of these families knew each other. My nephew had a very rare , heriditary desease, that is supposed to be found only in Indian families. We have not found our family family in the Dawes Rolls. Of course Robert was dead in 1898 and Addie was a little girl. Would the territorial census of 1890 indicate indian Blood? Can anyone suggest where we should look next My sister Julie is the lead on this one, and I'm just her sidekick ( I mention this becuase she has talked to many people on the net).
