26 November 2005 The Chronicle Telegram Elyria, Ohio Judy A. Hawes (nee Fitzwater), 50, of Avon, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at her home after a short illness. Born in Ashtabula, she lived in Avon the last seven years. She was a 1973 graduate of Jefferson High School and received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mount Vernon Nazarene College, now Mt. Vernon Nazarene University. Following graduation, she taught fourth grade in the Jefferson Schools System 1978-1979 until having her first child. In 1990, she and her husband, Jay, received a call into the ministry. Their first appointment was at Cleveland First Church of the Nazarene, where they co-directed a daycare and she was youth group leader and a Sunday school teacher. In 1992, they became the pastoral family of Shelby Church of the Nazarene in Shelby, where she was president of the Missionary Council and taught Sunday school. In 1995, they joined the ministerial staff at Delaware Church of the Nazarene in Delaware, where she was leader of Children’s Church. In 1996, they received the call to pastor the Elyria Community Church of the Nazarene, where she served as young adult Sunday school teacher and Missionary Council president and was involved in the Heaventrain ministry. After her husband’s death in 2001, she went into the bereavement ministry and touched many lives with her testimony and presentations. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, reading and spending time with her family. Survivors include sons Jarod J. of Dixon, Mo., and Jacob W. of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Jaimee A. Hager of Lexington, Ky.; three grandchildren; her mother, Doris Mae Fitzwater of Tavares Fla.; and brothers Gary Fitzwater of Leesburg, Fla., and Ronnie Fitzwater of Jefferson City, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, the Rev. Wesley J. “Jay” Hawes in 2001; and her father, Billy L. Fitzwater in 2001. Friends may call 3 to 7 p.m. today at Elyria Community Church of the Nazarene, 1107 Clemens Ave., Elyria, where services will be 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. David P. Wilson, district superintendent of North Central Ohio Church of the Nazarene, will officiate. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery, Geneva.
