Ed - This may sound like a "downer", but searching for a person in Ireland without knowing his/her county of origin is sure to be frustrating. Have you looked for obits for the two women you are sure came to the States, so as to screen it for county of origin, etc. Unfortunately, in most frequently found surnames, Fitzgerald ranks 36th which means there are a lot of them. If you have had access to the Griffith's Valuation CD put out by Family Tree Maker, altho it is not complete, it does have a great number of the name, but only seven William Fitzgeralds in Co. Tipperary, and none of the seven is my grand uncle William Fitzgerald born in 1815 so you see what I mean about it being incomplete. The only complete survey of heads of household in Ireland between 1848-1864 is the complete replication of Griffith's Valuation by the Ryans in Bray, Co. Wicklow. That one copied every page of the whole Valuation of Ireland and added a search engine. Unfortunately, they have not seen fit to put a reasonable price on it or sell/lease it to any genealogy supplier in the US. Last price I had from them.was £2,500 which is far from what most of us can pay. Please continue to try to pin down time and a wife's name in this country before spending money in Ireland.
