This appeared in the Jan. 20, 1848 issue of the Lime Rock Gazette (Rockland, Maine): "SHIPWRECK - The sch. Lion, of Dennis, from Philadelphia 2d inst., for Boston, split her mainsail on Wednesday the 5th when 50 miles south from Gay Head; and on Thursday a similar accident occurred to the foresail, at which time she sprung a leak and threw over deck load. On Saturday, at 3 P.M. the Lion sruck on skiff's Island Reef, at the mouth of Muskeget Channel, where she thumped hard and leaked badly; and the sea running very high, the Capt. found it necessary to throw over anchors and some coal, and finally to abandon her; which he was enabled to do through the exertion of Capt. Gamaliel Fiher and others who went to his assistance, and brought him, with his crew, to this port, early Saturday evening. The Lion went to pieces during Saturday night. She was loaded with coal. Vessel and cargo insured. (Edgarton Gazette)" Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
