>Rick, > >Where does that leave my German Fisher's ? > >Constance > For the German -- and the Native American, too -- it means an interested group would need to start it. The testing is not cheap, and there would need to be quite a few participants (at least 10 or so to begin with, and then perhaps another dozen or two "recruited" later on) in order for the results to be very meaningful. The more subjects tested and compared, the more inferences can be made regarding the results. Some groups have already been in progress for a couple of years, now; others are just in the early stages. You can read more about how it's done, and the current fees involved, at several locations, including the Fisherclan web site <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fisherclan/>. One of these is Family Tree DNA <http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com/>. Keep in mind that this project is Y-chromosome testing, which yields excellent paternity results, but only direct-line males can be "test subjects." In cases such as yours, Constance, the interested person would need to find a near relative (brother, cousin, father, uncle -- who carries the FISHER surname) to volunteer. [In another surname group, three of us agreed to pay the cost for testing in order to persuade a male with the surname, but who isn't interested in genealogy, to be the test subject.] In the entire FISHER surname, I can guess that there would be multiple origins, called MRCA (most recent common ancestor). This can be handled in any number of ways. One is by setting up several different Project Groups. Another is to keep everyone in the same group, but recognize from the beginning that there will be several different ancestral sources; thus, no single, common, "Father Adam" for all Fishers. I personally like this approach, as it permits greater interaction with and comparison of the data. Most surname groups that decide on such a project handle it in one of two ways. Either the entire membership of the Surname List declare themselves advocates of the idea, and thus it is considered List Business; or a little information is shared and some gentle recruiting done from time to time on the List, but a separate group is formed to handle the details and the discussions regarding the DNA testing. This List is fairly large, and fairly global; I doubt that everyone is interested in having daily discussions of the progress of such testing, even though most of us might be interested in occasional reports. How about it, Cousins? What is your thinking regarding setting up one or more FISHER DNA Testing Group(s)? Who would be interested in volunteering/ participating? Who would be interested in being the Group Administrator or part of a Steering Committee? Who would prefer to just hear about it once in a while? -- _________________ James Shuman jshuman@telis.org _________________
