Richard, Do you know the name of William's father? My great grandfather's name was Samuel M. Fisher and his father's name was George W. Fisher. I would think that "W" was for William since that name has been used in several generations since in my family. I have a George Fisher b. 1812 in NY state, with sons William b. 1844 and Humphrey b. 1848 (both in NY state). Most of the family immigrated to south-central Michigan around 1850.
