    1. [FISHER] Sorry..Couldn't resist!
    2. Susan Newell
    3. "I WANT" I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick von Steubenhoffmannschild or Spetznatz Afortoni, not William Brown or John Hunter or Mary Abbott. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year -- subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate isinglass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions, and carved voluble and informative inscriptions in their headstones. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established,still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries. I want family members who wrote memoirs, who enlisted in the military as officers and who served in strategically important(and well documented) skirmishes. I want relatives who served as councilmen, schoolteachers, county clerks and town historians. I want relatives who `religiously' wrote in the family Bible, journaling every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. In the case of immigrant progenitors, I want them to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by National Archives, and I want them to have applied for citizenship, and to have done so only in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, who joined every patrimonial society they could find, who kept diaries, and listed all their addresses, and who dated every piece of paper they touched. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and to keep for generations, the tribal homestead, and who left all the aforementioned pictures and diaries and journals intact in the library. I want my Native family to pass down the true Cherokee way and fight for our culture and keep our language going! I want to be what I AM..a proud Cherokee..whether a piece of paper says so or not! But most of all, I want ancestors I can FIND somewhere! "Author Unknown" > ==== BLAKELEY Mailing List ==== > Please post your queries here. 1. [FISHER] off topic...names
    2. Mary Kocak
    3. sorry this is off topic but with the discussion on names I just have to jump in here and share my story about naming my son last year. My husband and I had a hard time deciding on a name for him. We had narrowed it down to few by the time he was born but still had no name. On my 3rd day in the hospital we finally agreed on Kolton Andrew. Kolton because we liked the name and Andrews was my mother-in-laws maiden name. Even after naming him I still wasn't really happy with the name, I had really wanted to come up with something that reflected family history. All our Children have names that begin with K and I couldn't come up with anything. The only K name I have in my direct line is KRAMM and I certainly wasn't going to name my son that! I also wasn't happy because the name Kolton means Coal town and it just made no sense to me to name him this. When my son was less than a year old I finally had one of my brickwalls come tumbling down. I found that my gg-grandfather had established a coal town in Illinois that bears his name. His father's name was Andrew. Now my sons name makes perfect sense and I am glad we chose it. Mary the funny thing is no one calls him Kolton anyway, we could have named him anything, he is called Pee Wee because when he had no name in the hospital my then 2 year old started calling him that and even the nurses started using it. Someday he will probably be 6'5 and 250+ pounds like his father and people will still be calling him pee wee :-)

    3. Kathleen, If I remember the string of emails correctly, we were referring to just the surname ending not to bloodlines ending. As the only child of my father, the surname ended with him since his parents had 2 children...1 son, 1 daughter. The blood still runs thick through me, but the surname does not. One or two of my family members have names using mother's maiden name (or grandmothers) for middle names. Now that I'm a grandmother and a genealogy buff...I see the importance of this... but haven't been able to convince my children of it. Too bad...

    3. Do you have a Joe Fisher in your line? Sue Sue, I don't know of a Joe Fisher, but I have no idea who my great grandfather's siblings were or his mother's name. All I do know is that they lived in Bonhomme, St. Louis County from at least the 1850's to the late 1880's, but I can't find anything about other siblings or his mother. I can't imagine that he was an only child. Chris Fisher Thiessen
