I appreciate the clarification. I just started this and didn't want to be ignorant. I tried it on this one and it is simple enough. The problem we have is when a large number of people become involved in a topic, and each one is simply hitting the reply button and typing in their own message. In most e-mail programs, that will automatically include the previous message as well. Soon these become long and unwieldy, not to mention unnecessary. Further, in Digest mode, the same string may be repeated two or three times in a single digest! Part of learning appropriate e-mail etiquette ("netiquette") is when to include the original message and when to delete it. As a general rule, it is good to include a specific sentence or two that prompted your reply, but to delete the rest of the previous message. Sometimes, this is done by including the word [snip] to indicate the portion that has been deleted, especially if the part you retained appeared somewhere in the middle or near the end of the message. In most e-mail programs, it is possible to view the entire message before sending. At that point, you can still edit, and that is when you should do your [snipping]!!! And, perhaps most important of all, if you are not really replying to the previous message, please remember to change the subject line! Thanks! No probably not, since Christmas time is the time for getting new computers which means we get new people (and lots of new cousins) to our lists. They are already nervous about the new computers, coming online and joining these lists with the high hopes of making new friends, cousins and finding out their ancestry, and might even think they are doing rather well. But, instead of being taught correct netiquette, they are opening there email to this post and wondering if it is all worth it. >Please - clean 'em up - I know some subscribers who've left the list > >because of this and others who are threatening to leave..
