I do not know much about that avenue of research, but possibly some of it is now online. You might do a browser search for Ellis Island arrivals after 1920. If your family is of a FISCHER who might have changed his name, that may be why you are not finding his side anywhere. By the 1920's I am sure that they were very thorough census takers. Except now for the New Orleans terrible situation, I was going to suggest in checking their immigration records as well as through Philadelphia. Although the LDS FHL near you might have some of those records that have been created by present day volunteer of information after 1976 celebration of our country being in existence, by visitors to the island. I believe one of the questions to be answered on the census is when they came to this country and the year and month are entered? Wish I could be of more assistance. I know that was the case with my husband's FISCHER family, they only came here in 1873, so that is as far back as I could get with my meager experience for now. But it also told of where they were from, Mulhausen, Germany. I do have a lead there for future research, if an when.
