    2. On July 29 in 1868 The 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to all those born or naturalized in the United States, is adopted. The amendment was aimed primarily at assuring citizenship to Africa-American freed from slavery by the Civil War. 1914 Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, beginning World War I. 1959 In preparation for statehood, Hawaiians voted to send the first Chinese-American, Hiram L. 1. [FINK] Colonial Records - New York
    2. Fellow listmates, While searching through the stacks at New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, my eyes fell on this book: Calendar of British Historical Manuscripts 1664-1776 The title page also said: In the Office of the Secretary of State, Albany, New York. It might be worth looking at as there are references to deaths, marriages, births, naturalizations, correspondence between NY and other colonies, and many, many, other matters. It is indexed and the description gives a Volume and page number to view the described document. Perhaps this will help you over some brick walls. I didn't find what I was looking for but found it very interesting. Dusti

    1. [FINK] Solomon Fink and Family
    2. Diane Benventano
    3. Here is my posting for my Fink line. My great grandmother was Emma Sarah Fink. She was born June 4, 1858 in Fulton County, Illinois. She died March 9, 1910 in Boulder Colorado. Emma's father was Samuel S. Fink born November 1831 in Maryland. Emma's mother, Elizabeth Zuch either passed on or was divorced from Samuel as he remarried Esther Macdonald in 1862 in Fulton County, Illinois. Samuel's children by Esther were Edgar, born abt 1863, Effa born abt 1867, Cora born abt 1872, Clida born abt 1879. Samuel Fink's father was Solomon Fink, born abt 1802 in Frederick County, Maryland. His wife was Sarah Bixler and they were married abt 1830 in Maryland. Their children were Joseph born Sept 24, 1831, Samuel S., Sarah Ellen born Dec 17, 1834, Catherine born 1835, Lydia Ann born 1837, William Fenton born Feb 11, 1839, John H. born Feb. 22, 1840, Amanda born 1841, Jacob born 1843, Lucinda born 1844, Phidelia born 1844, Ezra born 1846, Susan born 1847, Oliva born 1848. There is a Solomon Fink listed in the will of Philip Fink Sr. The will was probated Sept 5, 1803 in Frederick Maryland. There were 8 children listed. I am still needing verification that the Solomon listed on Philip's will is my Solomon. Any help in any direction on this line will be greatly appreciated.

    1. [FINK] Elnora FINK
    2. Marcie, Also, Elnora MIGHT have also been married BEFORE she married William. There were few things a woman could do respectfully to support herself and/or her children unless she had a father, brother, or a son old enough to look after her and the rest of the family. AND men needed women to look after their children, keep house, etc. She certainly had the example of both in her Uncle Van BURTON and her stepmother Mary SKILLEN Stralheim Fink Spencer. Although Mary did not remarry after Wm. SPENCER's death. [I need to get a copy of his will and probate record; she may have been provided the use of the home and household furnishings UNTIL/UNLESS she remarried, which was the usual conditions of the day.] When I went to Pulaski County looking for Jacob FINK and Mary SKILLEN's marriage record, Mary to Wm. SPENCER, and info on my RHODES (at that time) families just as an after thought, I decided to see if the marriage to Jacob STRALHEIM was there. I could not believe my luck! I am so glad I followed that thought otherwise, I would be looking for that record in Ohio! to no avail. I haven't found Jacob STRALHEIM's body (and may never be able to) but there may never have been a tombstone, their daughter Catharine is buried with the SKILLEN's, Jacob FINK is buried with his first wife in the WOOLEY plot, but Mary is not buried with Wm. SPENCER and his other wives although I suspect she is in the same cemetery at Crooked Creek Christian Church just south of Royal Center, IN. Yes, I'm familiar with where you are. I was raised in Marshall County and was a member of Indiana Rural Youth. Went often to meetings in Madison County when I lived in Indy. Good luck and I'm holding my breath again. Dusti

    3. Ok Dusti, I never thot about her re-marrying tho...I dont' really think she did. I don't have her buried with William and I find that strange. ? May be she did remarry. I won't be home tomorrow...going on a hunt again with a friend to Hancock Co., IN. to look for my ROGERS line. I'll try to get some more hunting done on this family in a week or so...have some other plans this week. :( Thanks, Marcie in IN. -----Original Message----- From: DustiGen@aol.com <DustiGen@aol.com> To: FINK-L@rootsweb.com <FINK-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, June 06, 2000 7:53 PM Subject: [FINK] Elnora FINK, Florence FINK Rhoades, and Sarah Lavina FINK Smith >Marcie, > >Do you know when Elnora FINK died? > >AND don't forget to check for a remarriage of Elnora while you are looking, >that might be why you lost her. > >Elnora is not mentioned in the funeral home abstract of Florence FINK's death >while all the other surviving 1/2 siblings were listed --- unless they had >lost contact --- so perhaps this will give you a place from which to start >backtracking. 2. Marcie, Do you know when Elnora FINK died? AND don't forget to check for a remarriage of Elnora while you are looking, that might be why you lost her. Elnora is not mentioned in the funeral home abstract of Florence FINK's death while all the other surviving 1/2 siblings were listed --- unless they had lost contact --- so perhaps this will give you a place from which to start backtracking. Sarah Lavina FINK Smith died 21 February 1934 in South Dakota; and Florence died in Logansport, Indiana, on 2 August 1934 the widow of Henry RHOADES/RHODES (and a million other spellings). Totally by accident, one of Sarah Lavina FINK's granddaughters and I have made contact while she was searching her SMITH side of the house. Whether or not we connect on the SMITH side is unknown, but it blew her away that someone would respond to the insignificant comment about John SMITH's wife, Sarah Lavina FINK and their marriage in Cass County, Indiana, when she was looking for John SMITH's parents. Please jot down the marriages, deaths, births of FINKs as you come across them and share on the list. I'd like to know more about Jacob A. 1. [FINK] Elnora FINK
    2. Marcie, Jacob FINK (b. 7 Aug 1819) whose marriage on 10 Aug 1843 to Catharine WOOLEY (b. about 30 Oct 1821 daughter of Hugh WOOLEY and his wife Hannah) is recorded in Marion County, OH. 1850 Census, Van Buren Twp, Pulaski Co., IN Jacob Fink, 29, Value of Real Estate $600, bp: PA Catharine Fink, 27, bp: NY Mary Emily Fink, 6, bp: OH Maria Louisa Fink, 4, bp: OH Minerva Elnora Fink, 3, bp: OH Sarah Alice Fink, 1, bp: IN Another child was born: Jacob Alonzo Fink c Dec 1851 although referred to as Jacob Lorenzo Fink in the guardianship files of the heirs of Jacob Fink. Catharine WOOLEY Fink died 23 December 1851 [I'd guess from child birth] and is buried in the WOOLEY plot in the Kline Cemetery, Royal Center, Boone Township, Cass County, Indiana. Jacob FINK then married on 28 March 1852 Mary SKILLEN (b 16 Dec 1827 in OH) the widow of Jacob STRALHEIM and the daughter of Benjamin C. SKILLEN. After all, Jacob did have a house full of children, one of which was a three month old baby. The 1850 Census Record for Van Buren Township, Pulaski County, Indiana, show the Benjamin SKILLEN, Jacob STRALHEIM, and Jacob FINK on neighboring farms in the order I have listed them. I also found land records in Indiana that indicate both Benjamin SKILLEN and Jacob STRALHEIM migrated from Shelby County, Ohio. To Jacob FINK and Mary SKILLEN were born: Florence C. FINK b. c. 24 August 1853 [death record says 1854] Sarah Lavina FINK, b. c. 21 January 1855 Eli W. Fink, b. 6 Nov. 1856 Jacob FINK died 4 May 1856 [two days after consulting two doctors in Logansport, Indiana, regarding himself and the children as reflected by receipts in the Probate Record of Jacob FINK, who died intestate]. It was the receipt in the Probate Record for Jacob's tombstone that gave me Jacob's birth and death dates [as well as Catharine's death date which was written in pencil on the back of the receipt and too light to Xerox] with the instructions to deliver the tombstone to Logansport. Jacob is buried in the WOOLEY plot with Catharine; and Mary was pregnant with Eli. According to the Guardianship Records in Pulaski County, Indiana, the FINK children from the marriage with Catharine were either indentured or apprenticed. Elnora might have had it a bit easier than her siblings as she was indentured to Van BURTON of Pulaski County. Van's wife Abigail was a sister of Catharine's. The reference to Elnora in the report to the Court in May 1860 by the children's guardian [William S. SPENCER] is the only one that DOES NOT say how old she is nor the age she is to be freed of the indenture. William SPENCER was a Farmer (rather wealthy in land and personal property -- according to the Census Records) in Boone Township, Cass County, Indiana. I had come across his name many times before in estate records of various relatives of mine; he managed to get himself appointed to be Administrator of the Estates of men like Jacob FINK who died intestate. The Final Accounting always read the same. After the listing of the personal property of the deceased which included, i.e., the chickens, two milk cows, one hog, one bedstead, 4 comforters, one table and five chairs, dishes, pans, chamber pot, laundry tub, etc., "the widow waives her right to the personal property of the deceased in order to pay my administration fees of the Estate of . . ." As you can see, everything she needed to survive was taken and she "did not have a pot to . . . in". The Widow FINK had had dealings with Mr. SPENCER before with regard to Jacob STRALHEIM's estate. However, Mr. SPENCER did not have as free a hand in that matter; he was one of five men appointed as administrator AND one of the other four was Mary's father. Mary was a little older, and I'm sure had observed Mr. SPENCER's dealings. On 3 February 1858, the Widow FINK married William S. SPENCER; I believe to preserve her children's inheritance. I don't believe (although, I can't recall for certain) that Elnora FINK married in Cass County, Indiana. You might check the marriage records for Pulaski County. If you don't find her there, try White County; that area of Pulaski County is close enough to White. Oh yes, Florence FINK is my great-grandmother. It was thru the Funeral Home Extracts of Cass County that I discovered her parentage and Mary SKILLEN's marriages. BTW, where are you in Indiana? Dusti (misplaced Hoosier in Boston Mass)

    2. Dave, Another place you might consider checking is the Jewish Genealogy Society. I have attended some of their meetings here in Boston and HAVE ALWAYS learned something new. For instance, many of the customs of Eastern European Jews are not Jewish customs but of the European culture in which the lived. Many considered the German Jews very arrogant. This was due to the fact that the German states REQUIRED EVERYONE to be educated, while education of Jews in most of the other European countries was illegal. And another thing to consider: Is/was there a Jewish newspaper in Detroit when Moses died [or married]? I found a lot of good detail information in the one in Boston. Dusti
