She was born to Benjamin Findley and Sarah Towson Findley, but her mother died in 1867 and children went to live with different people. In 1870 she lived in Drumore, Lancaster, PA, with her maternal grandparents, Thomas and Elizabeth Towson. In 1880, she is listed in the census as May A Findley, living with her uncle, Thomas Jackson Towson and his wife, Eliza, in Cleveland, Ohio.
