A family story has his father Richard Findley from Ireland and his mother, name unknown, from Germany and they met on the ship on their way over. Smallwood had 6 brothers all older, and no sisters. His mother died 3 days after his birth and his father gave Smallwood and brother Jep to a foster family named May and kept the other 5 boys. I actually found Richard Findley born 1786 SC If Richard Findley, Smallwood's father was a 7th son, he had 6 older brother but uncertain if there were other siblings as well.
